never heard of any air rifle bans in texas, the ol daisy bb gun is the grand daddy of air rifles , still see kids packing them at times. killing cats or other "pets" is probably a bigger legal issue. of course this is texas not California.

In most cases air rifles are not classed as firearms. And it's not illegal to put a suppressor on an air gun. Many are sold with factory suppressors. Gamo is one such brand that offers those. Stick to .22 and keep velocity under 1200 fps for best results. Some of the .177s are too fast, breaking the sound barrier so you still get the supersonic 'crack'. Check your local laws, naturally. Other than requiring someone to be 18 or over and absolutely prohibiting them on educational property, MS does not regulate "Non-Powder Guns".

It's not a State law, just a city ordinance; still costs money if you get caught though. MOST cities have the air rifle ban. Never made any sense....no air rifle, but you could use broad head razor tipped arrow with no problem.

ive killed feral pigs from the living room , neighbors never heard a thing.
You're not saying you used an air rifle are you? I've seen the feral pigs walk away with several .223 rounds in them. I personally believe that feral pigs are the main reason that the .300 Black Out was invented; smaller rounds just weren't effective.

12 guage shot gun with rifled slugs is weapon of choice for close up work (one ounce slug dumps all of its energy into the target, devastating.) , 45-70 out to 100 yards , 7mm mag if i'm not set up for a close encounter. I guess some cities have bans on shooting air rifles , I can't be right about everything ….. what fun would that be .air rifle still not a firearm and if done right no one will no.... it comes down to choice , there is a feral or just an over population of anything that becomes a problem animal , and local animal control will not help , then what can a person do but act . I doubt the neighbor has ever vaccinated a single cat let alone 40 plus. this thread is kind of a weird place , maybe he should just run over the cats with his tenere and all would be well. that might take awhile . sometimes you have to protect your property the best way you can , even if there is a ordinance prohibiting it. I got an idea , sue the city or county for not doing their job.... damages could run into the _______.00

I think you need to change the title again.

Maybe something like “Asshole People With Pets.”

Lock? HA! This one hits close to home for me.
But I did change the title.

We had a political appointee boss who lived on a big boat in the Washington DC marina, which was really more of a floating house. I never was on the boat but saw photos of the legend because she had 9 cats and (I kid you not) had life jackets for EACH with their names on them. It also supposedly reeked on that boat. Definitely met the definition for Crazy Cat Lady.

As for asshole pets and their owners, meet my neighbor and his f*-ing big fat pitbull. Their fence is close to my bedroom window and the dog has a compulsive need to bark whenever it is outside. The owners apply zero training or restraint because in their words "It's what dogs do." Seems that I need to talk to them at the beginning of every summer, because normally the dog goes out when the wife gets up around 7:30 and I'm already long up. When it's cold, anybody walking by the house on the street can hear the damned dog barking away inside because nobody is home all day. I was in their front hall a while back and the dog's torn the inside of the house to shreds.

A couple of months ago the neighbor started to put the dog out at 5:25 in the morning as he was getting ready to go to work and I finally banged on the door on what was the 2nd or 3rd morning, waking the whole family. Oops Gee My Bad for waking you people after YOUR dog woke me up. Who the F puts out a barking dog at 5:25 am and leaves it out long enough to take a shower? And if it's warm, lets the damned thing bark outside till after 10pm? They've been better since then and I just have to hear it after about 7-7:30 when the wife gets up.

They bought a bark collar which was effective for a week or so. The dog is strong and dumb and just doesn't mind. I bought a electronic bark thing to put on the fence and that drive him to the other side of their yard for a maybe a week.

Other neighbors like the family and aren't so close physically. Plus I'm already the neighbor who doesn't want to socialize (for some reason) so it would be all out bad if I were to call animal control. I love dogs and will get another at some point, especially with retiring, but already know how hard it will be to keep one from barking back.

My traps went cold on me. Got to put them up for a while and chill. I hauled one off the other day several miles. Sob was back the next day. I'll take them across the Ms. river bridge from now on and share with La.

I don't know if you live within the city limits of Natchez, but if you do, I found this municipal ordinance on line relating to cats. It's from the Animal Control Ordinance of the City of Natchez, Mississippi:

Sec. 10-133. Animals to be kept in sanitary enclosures; creation of disturbance; owners responsible forremoval of waste.

a) The owners or harborers of all dogs, cats or any other animals within the city are required to
keep the animals within suitable enclosures and are further required to keep the enclosures
sanitary and clean so as to prevent disagreeable odors arising therefrom, or the presence or
breeding of flies, mosquitoes and other pests. It shall be unlawful for the owner or harborer of
any dogs, cats or any other animals to permit the animals to create a disturbance in the
neighborhood or to destroy property in the neighborhood or annoy any person or family, or to
otherwise become a nuisance in any manner, particularly by reasons of noises, odors, filthy
conditions, destruction of property, tearing of garbage bags, scattering of refuse or the breeding
of flies, mosquitoes and other pests. Courtesy tickets, warnings or other notice followed by
subsequent written citations by the animal control officer shall create a rebuttable presumption
as to the violation of this subsection.

I don't know the ins and outs of law enforcement in Mississippi, but enforcement of this section would either fall under the jurisdiction of the municipal police, or a codes enforcement officer from the municipality.

I downloaded the entire ordinance. I can email it to you if you want.
I talked to the worthless dog catcher here and sent him this ordinance. He called me back and left a message that said. This ordinance was like the jay walking law. It's not enforceable anymore. Wtf. I even went to the police station to complain gracefully. They don't give a shit.

Ruger Redhawk model 5060 revolver loaded with Black Talon lead. Just keep in mind the Lubilox (black oxide) will play hell in the barrel. So make sure it's an animal worth disintegrating. I recommend not loading more than a 180 grain (11.7 grams) in the shell for that bullet. 158 grain (10.2 grams) is a perfect combination of relative low velocity and high energy that will drop just about any animal on your property.

You have to love stuff like this. The animal control guy is too lazy to do anything, and unless it is an arrestable criminal offense, the police department can only turn it over to the animal control guy.

If it is on the books, it is still enforceable.

I know of a few people who carry 10mm sidearms with them when hunting for hogs/pigs. From what I understand, those things are mean and anything less that 10mm will darn near bounce of their skulls.

As far as bunnies in the backyard, may I present Annie. She is the nut on the left in the picture. So far, to the best of our knowledge, 1 squirrel, 2 adult bunnies, at least 6 baby bunnies, and 2 mice. And the backyard is an average suburban lot. Now, the problem with Annie, and non-raised garden in the backyard would be problematic :D And we adapted her in February, it will be interesting to see how she does in the long run. Granted, we was a stray, and has started to really figure out she does not need to hunt to eat.

LOL, that's BS. It isn't like this is some ancient law, like the one that says you have to have an escort walk ahead of your car swinging a lantern when you drive through town. The Natchez municipal code (of which this is a part) was adopted in July 1997. Your dipshit dog catcher and local PD are trying to say that the law falls under the legal concept of desuetude, and that's not for him to decide.

You have one other potential solution that doesn't involve putting yourself in legal jeopardy by leaving poison around the property or letting rounds fly in town. In my home state, people had the right to file private criminal complaints through the local judiciary. Where I'm from they call this a District Justice; other places call them District Magistrates, or Justices of the Peace. This isn't a lawsuit, or a small claims action; it's a criminal complaint. A plaintiff would file an affidavit to support the charges, the magistrate would review it to make sure it met the legal requirements, and if it did, the magistrate would issue a summons to the defendant to appear in court. The plaintiff had to pay a fee to file the charges. The charges were the same ones that would be filed by the police or the dog law officer. You'd file a complaint based on a violation of this particular section of the Natchez Municpal Ordinance. The plaintiff could have a lawyer at the hearing to represent him, or he could represent himself. The defendant could also have a lawyer. Hearings at this level, in my experience, are tolerant of plaintiffs representing themselves and that the plaintiffs don't have a lot of knowledge of how a courtroom works.

Go talk to the District Justice in your county and see what the rules are about private criminal complaints. If you can do it, file the complaint. If you get some friction there, call the local District Attorney's office and ask him why a law that was approved in 1997 won't be enforced, and what he (as an elected official) intends to do about it.

If you plan on going this route, make sure you have some evidence on your side to show that all these cats are originating from your neighbor's property. If they leave out food for the cats, take video of the cats eating on their property. Take video of your neighbors interacting with the cats on their property. Leave a camera running all day if you can that shows the cats migrating from your neighbor's property to yours.

I get that it's a really cathartic fantasy to imagine shooting the neighbor's cats, or leaving poison out for them, but I can just about guarantee you that the laws about cruelty to animals do get enforced (people love cats and dogs), and if you get caught doing it, the one getting charged with something will be you. These aren't raccoons, or rats, or squirrels, which ordinarily aren't protected by cruelty to animals laws; they're domestic pets. If you're in a residential area with houses nearby, they might even try and gild the lily and add some additional charges like Recklessly Endangering because you were shooting a gun where other people could be hit. Besides, even if you kill a few cats, that won't stop the problem. They've already acquired 45 of them; having a few dead ones just frees up a few slots to add some more, plus then you're going to have a neighbor who might suspect you of being the feline Terminator, and maybe they start watching your house to try and catch you doing something to the cats. If I'm rich, crazy, and a cat hoarder, maybe I'd set up a nice surveillance system aimed right at your property with 24 hour video surveillance (I could buy a great system for a couple hundred dollars), just hoping for that one moment when the camera captures Fluffy's head exploding while you're holding a rifle. Poisoning them presents an even greater issue, because you have zero control over what happens to poisoned bait once you leave it outside. And once again, poison won't stop the cats from coming into your yard, and a bunch of dead cats won't stop your neighbor from getting more of them.

One thing I didn't see in your post (maybe I missed it) was whether or not you actually went to your neighbor and made the complaint directly to them about their cat hoard. Even if they tell you to go pound sand, it'll help your case if you can tell a magistrate that the neighbors were aware of the problem and refused to address it. And start documenting every occurrence of the cats being in your yard, and any interactions you have with the neighbors about it, because that also supports your case.

Good Luck.

Why would you put laxatives in some food and leave it outside for the cats to eat? The cats are already taking a dump on the OP's property, so they've already established that as a place to use as a litterbox. I know it creates a great mental picture of a cat pooping all over the rich neighbor's living room, but the reality is that you'd just be creating a bigger mess for yourself when, a few hours after the cat ate the doctored food, he'd be back in your yard leaving an even bigger mess for you to clean up. Especially if the cat that ate it was one of the outside cats, since those ones are the ones less likely to be going inside the house. It sounds more like a Benny Hill sketch.

Yeah, the antifreeze thing is bad; animals are attracted to it, including that dog of the neighbors that you actually like, or worse; maybe the neighbor's toddler wanders into the yard someday. It's a pretty awful way to go. Setting aside the cruelty aspect of it, it's still not a solution to 45 cats living next door to you, unless your intent is to go full John Wayne Gacy on the whole pack at once. Cats don't understand property lines; it's not like they sit around saying to each other, "hey, Fred drank that green stuff at the neighbor's house and died, so don't go past the rose bushes any more". The cats aren't the actual problem, the neighbor harboring them is, and whatever solution you arrive at is going to have to involve dealing with the neighbor and not the cats.

That ordinance RCinNC sent me did some good. I got a call from the dog catcher today. Evidently he changed his mind. He served them a warning and said he's gonna enforce it. I told him it aint gonna happen. He said "you watch". I don't know how the neighbor is gonna react. If he comes over to my house. He will get his ass kicked. I saw 30 empty chewy.com boxes by the road in the last 2 months twice.
