No Mate,

I'm doing the Tenere Tragics next year, but would be interested to get a run down of the APC event from someone on an S10.

Have read a bit about it but only a casual glance.

Had a look at the APC rally web site. Looks like fun. Thinking of trying a 4 day one in Feb. Just need a few things and I should be right. have the GPS, bash plate. Just got the boots and helmet sorted, now for soft paniers.

Yeah Ive been getting things that I need to do the rally. Think Ive got everything now. Dont forget the 2 way radio. I got one and a sena blue tooth device so I can hear it in the helmet. Not sure if you need a 2 way radio for the 4 day ride. I was thinking of doing the 4 day to. Not sure if the S10 is going to be to big and heavy for me on the 14 day ride. Would love to take it but mite take a KTM 690 first and see how I go. If i like it and think the S10 can do it with my limited abilities, I will take the S10 next time.

KTM not a bad idea but I dont have that option. Think the Tenere can handle it just slower? People doing amazing things with them. Part of the adventure is learning yours and the bikes limits. I could get a DR250 and easily do it, where is the kudos in that?

Didn't read too many rules. Actually it not all that restrictive as you can camp or stay where you want. Its about doing this and knowing you have the support if needed, meeting like minded as well. Riding is great! Better if you can share it. Bit hard to control society without rules, I take it controlling a group in such a large area would be no different?

Hope to see you on the track then Camel?

"The rally is no place to test a new tyre, 90% of problems that riders have on adventure bikes are because of tyres. Riders need to start with a new set of nobby tyres with ultra heavy duty tubes and have 26lbs in them. They will require a second set half way around the course. If riders have tubeless they will be required to put tubes in before starting . In the rally 60 % of the bikes will get dented rims and when you run tubeless that means game over. The ultra heavy duty tubes are such an important part of a rally bike please make sure that your bike shop gets the right ones (Bridgestone and Michelin are the best and they weight about 5 kg each) Bikes that weight less than 200kg should use Dunlop 606 front and rear tyres Bikes that weight over 200 kg should use Dunlop 908 rally raid tyres front and rear. Some riders will not have put aggressive nobby tyres on their bikes before but all riders in the rally will need them."

I just think that they have many rules, some good, some bad. still sounds cool.

Thanks for the info :) Had no idea about the tubes being that heavy! I was going to go something a little less hard core but I see that may be unwise. I have read about the rim problems on the rally and the need for tubes. If I get a taste for this I will get stronger rims if need be.

Yeah the are a few rules, but not to excessive, and I can see the reason for them. Tenrider, Ive seen the people that can do amazing things on the S10, but unfortunately I haven't got that sort of experience or talent. As for doing it easy on a DR250, not sure if you read Trailzone magazine and seen Clubby and Steve do extensive mods to a couple of 2012 WR450 to do the rally, but I dont think it would be easy. I understand your thinking, if you didn't have to carry anything or worry about range it would be easy. But its 7500km, It would be a strain to carry all the gear and fuel, and would need the same type of motor mods, also be a very uncomfortable ride for the distance. The guys from trailzone suggested a 650 would be the best bike to do the rally on after they did it. Also the organizers of the rally suggest not using a bike that weighs more than 200kgs. Dont get me wrong I would love to do it on the S10, but I'm not sure of the conditions I would come across, hence why I would do it on the 690 first and if I think next time I could take the S10 I would. Be interesting to take the S10, because Im not sure if anyone has ever taken one. Anyway If you are going, it will be great to catch up, and/or team up. I would be doing it in 2014 as I need to start doing some more training on dirt and prepare a few things. If they run the same course I think Mildura would be a great start point out of the 6 starting spots. Also hoping they go out to Big Red again, I want to give that a shot...not sure how a S10 would go getting up that but I think thats a optional part of the rally. Oh and if you are getting inner tubes get the thickest you can.

John Hudson, APC rally organiser just replied to my email.

I Quote, "You could do the 4 day rally on your super10. You would need to be of average ability. You could drop the bike a couple of times during the weekend, most people do. You are only required to carry a set of cloths to wear in the pubs at night.
You don’t need a radio or any camping gear. We stay in pubs each night.
The one suggestion i would give is to get a good set of nooby tyres . The standard tyres would not be suitable.

Kind regards,

John Hudson"

What's better, wife has given me 4 days leave ;D. So tyres and crash bars it is.

Couldn't really say about the tyres. Thinking Feb, hot dry not a lot of rain? So not too much mud. Only really guessing here. Thinking the 4 day trip is a bit of an appetizer, cut your teeth sort of thing. Just had a look at the Tenere Tragics video and the guys dont look like they are running anything too monstros and they ride the dirt all day. Most look like they are running standard tyres.
