Never needed one, but I seem to recall you had a problem with yours a few years back due to corrosion of the terminals. The usual problem is arcing internally, leading to the dreaded click ........ then nothing. I wonder if they can be opened up & the points cleaned up.

Whilst I understand your mechanic's logic, the cost disparity seems little short of ludicrous. IIRC, they were used on FJRs, so maybe some NOS may turn up on eBay, unless your need has urgency. Are there any manufacturers ID marks on the original, other than the Yam PN 4YE-81941-2 that might lead you to an alternative source?

I had to replace the starter solenoid on my MT01 about 4 years ago and went aftermarket rather than OEM. I’ve had no trouble at all since and wouldn’t hesitate to go aftermarket again.

yep,

i had a nightmare a few yrs ago with the click click and nothing, bought a new battery at the time a yuasa 14s but put that on and still the dreaded click click, mechanic ended up pulling the connection back off the starter relay and the block was green and the relay was corroded badly, but once that was all cleaned and sorted it fired first time every time and with the new 14s battery been brilliant for 3 yrs now.
but lately when i pull the bike out to ride after week lay up i,m getting the click click again but it then fires and goes all day, you can stop and fires first time all day, but get it home leave aweek and click click is back

and because of previous it has to be that starter relay again
