Thinking about gutting it and make my own guts. Anybody try taking one apart?
If you ask 'why?', cause I'm cheap and want to spend $ elsewhere. ::017::

I get it. All you know how to do is buy something that bolts on to your bike. :'(
Sometimes that is the most cost and time effective method. There has been a thread about gutting the stock cat (I searched briefly, but eyes start to wobble when everything else starts getting added, so left it for now). It did involve some cutting, gutting and then re welding a plate back on, to what end result is subjective. I'm not sure what is to be gained power wise so I personally have not bothered, but take on board what others have said and try to keep your exhaust stock, in case you sell or regs of some kind, get an after market unit.

Cost, no. Time, probably yes.
An extra stock exhaust can be had cheaply to mod. Aftermarket exhaust cans are very simple internally, even the restriction they have easily changed.
I'd rather make something if I'm able, than buy it. Then I have something different and unique. I have plenty of time on my hands now that I only have one bike to play with.

I have not done anything with the stock headers, except remove them and replaced them with arrows.

I'm on my 4th aftermarket slip on (some shitty art pipe from europe in late 2011, two brother-too loud, custom made staintune- for sale, and now an arrow slip on)

The stock slip on has a cap. The cap can be removed, and the exit tip can be drilled out...at least that's what I think I did 4 yrs ago....

And that's what I will not do.
It's like buying a new bike. You don't really know if you'll like it until you put some miles on it, but you already spent the money.
Self mod's are fairly cheap.

When I had my 92 Nighthawk I ddi the Tim Hodge Pipe Mod. Was great along with the cab mod. Not sure about the guts on the OEM Tenera can.

Heay ace50, I get where you're coming from... If you look at the blow apart of the stock muff:

It appears the end cap just bolts off, and is possibly rebuild-able... Never been in there but it's a harmless exploration, and even taking any removable baffles out or abating material and running the engine would be harmless -- though I don't think you'll see much in the way of performance improvement. Gutting the Cat might get things flowing freer but has liabilities.

Hey Greg, you could've save yourself some money in the long run if you had just bought an Akrapovic at the get-go. :) ::003::

(Sorry to hijack the thread! Back to the discussion about Frankensteining a stock exhaust... ;D)

There are about a dozen fasteners holding that jungle of plastic and heat shields on the end of the can. I pulled mine off, removed the spark arrester, knocked a two inch hole in the baffle with a hole saw, and made a home made two inch tip that bolted on the studs of the spark arrester. Has a deeper note now, can't be heard over an air cooled twin but it's nice

How do you like the sound with the Full Arrow system, this is what I will have when I get around to fitting my Arrow end can to the bike.

If I like this Arrow sound track I will have a used stock end can going cheap if anyone in the UK wants one to butcher.

hi Rasher,
I can slap the go pro on, and give it a go. With the full system, the system really barks. It's like my staintune but better >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
I wonder what it would sound like with the staintune, with the arrow pipes ::015:: ::015:: ::015:: ::015::

Should not be too hard with half decent fabrication skills. Other than making more noise and emissions what are your goals to this modification?

You do know it's against the law to tamper with OEM AQMD/EPA approved exhaust systems. Cheap can end up with a huge fine, bike impounded and arrest. If you are willing to accept the risk then go for it.

Here is the cost of tampering with anything that has to do with noise or emission:

You are are subject to civil penalties up to $45,268 per noncompliant vehicle or engine, $4,527 per tampering event and $45,268 per day for reporting and record keeping violations. 42 U.S.C. § 7524; 40 C.F.R. § 19.4.

Easy there Stef. Just trying to help out a fellow rider who may not know the consequences of messing with federal mandated equipment. I did mention if he is willing to accept the risk then go for it.
