OCD me :)rolleyes:) went back and pulled the airbox lid and had a better look at what holds the filter element in place.
The lid has a ridge that presses downward on the filter about 3/4 of the way around. (red line drawn on the bottom side of the filter in the photo).
That in itself should keep it against the seal. The weakened triangular part on mine is kind of a suspenders added to a belt.
It's held in place okay.
Given my ST is 9 years old and has 46k miles, I put some waterproof grease in the seal grooves and ordered new seals.
Another project for another day.51s0QCF-zqL._AC_SL1001_.jpg

Was there any sign the package had damage? almost sounds like it was not stored correctly or had some weight on it that distorted it. So far the HiFlow filters I've used have been easy drop in fits to the OEM box.

The box was perfect.
It may have just been one of those manufacturing process deals where it warped and got by somehow.
For all I know, it could've survived being clamped down in the airbox without breaking before I tested it.
Hiflofiltro has some pretty high standards, yet like anything, stuff can happen.
It's in there, sealed well and will do a good job anyway. Would I buy another? Sure. =)

Handling of freshly molded parts has to be done carefully. If the parts are still a little soft, improper handling can warp/distort them permanently.

I installed my HiFlo filter today. I don't know whether the filter element itself is comparable to OEM, but the HiFlo feels every bit as substantial as the OEM filter. The only real difference I found between the two is that the HiFlo has one less plastic rivet holding on the wire screen above the filter element. It dropped right into place with no issues.

This is what they look like side by side:

The OEM filter in the photo is just over a year old and has 11,764 miles on it. I'm glad I didn't wait til the 19,000 mile interval to change it.

I noticed when I fitted my Hiflo air filter that the mesh screen has larger perforations on the factory part. Your pic shows the same, so not a batch issue. It shouldn't make a world of difference, but it is a difference.

The plastic rivets that hold the screen to the filter are also slightly smaller than the ones on the OEM filter.

Also noticed my hi flow was angled up more on the back and took a good amount of pressure to secure the top of the air box lid. Next time ill be going with a yamaha one..

I should note my air filter was for a 12 and my air box is a 2015 year. Id bet the part numbers are all the same tho. May check and give hi flow a call about the defective filter if all the numbers match up..

2 hiflow filters from Jeff
I don’t like the bent pleats.
Not worth saving a few bucks for this kind of quality control.IMG_1331.jpeg

Oh, I don't know. I think they'd straighten out when I'm "cleaning my valves". The air flow throttle bodies would suck the bends right out. :D

HiFlow didn’t fit.
Can’t explain exactly which dimension; the whole thing just wouldn’t seat, then wouldn’t allow the cover to seat.
ordering OEM

I actually ordered two, after I didn’t like the pleats on the first one. Second has same fitment issue. When you lay it into place, the upper lip is too large and won’t drop in like OEM will. If you force it, the airbox bends and the lid won’t seat.
Verified fitment on their site;

Must be a bad batch out there. I’ve used them a couple of times and they fit the same as OEM.

That would have been nice; cheaper and faster delivery than OEM offerings, but if it’s a batch issue, there’s no telling how many I'd have to order. OEM only extra $8 and on it’s way.
