Another catastrophic CCT failure.

I didn't know about cct failures until I saw this thread. I don't want my gen 1 tnere to face the same situation. We are in lockdown and unable to go to a mechanic. I'm not a very handy person. I'd like to change the cct to a graves manual cct. Not sure if the cct was replaced by prev owners. Im the 8th owner. But I'm more than willing to try it as sometimes bike doesn't start up. Not sure if it's due to this. But usually seems like the "hard start". Wot fixes it. But it rattles and there's ticking the first few seconds. I don't want to lose my s10. I love it so much. May I know how do I go about replacing the cct? I tried YouTube but not much guides there.

Recommend removing the valve and clutch covers so you can anchor/secure the timing chain to the cam & crank sprockets with tie-wraps to ensure it won't jump before removing the tensioner. Leave the tie wraps in place until the new tensioner is in place and deployed or adjusted. Then remove the tie wraps and rotate the engine a few times and con firm the timing marks are still correctly aligned before buttoning up and trying to start the engine. Don't short cut it!

There are some good tutorials out there, it's pretty easy to do. Tying down the cams isn't needed, you can put all the tension needed on the chain with the side cover off. More research, it's out there.

yep and me, thats something i would not go anywhere near if i didn,t have the experience knowing the damage that can be done

Yamaha has a new version of the Gen II CCT that replaced the one that was originally installed in 2014 and up bikes. The most recent version of the automatic CCT is 2BS-12210-91. I have one sitting on my shelf waiting to be installed, as soon as I schedule my next valve check. I'm a decent home mechanic and a fairly decent hobbyist fabricator, and I've been comfortable doing things like removing the entire front and rear of the bike, rebuilding brake calipers, forks, replacing bearings, etc. But for some reason, removing the CCT and installing a new one intimidates me. Valve clearance checks are the same for me, though it that case, it's not the clearance check that creates the issue. I'd be intimidated by having to change the shims if the clearance was out of spec, which means I'd have to button everything up and take it to the shop just so they could disassemble it again.

I'm sure someone has had a Gen II CCT failure; it's a mechanical part, after all, and at some point one will probably fail. I can't specifically recall someone on the forum reporting one, but I could have missed it or forgot it. I don't believe the Gen II units have anywhere close to the reputation that the Gen 1's did, and even with the Gen I's, it's still really hard to tell how common the issue is. Nevertheless, my 2014 is coming up on 80,000 miles with the original CCT, so the next valve clearance check sounds like a good time to have it replaced.

In the most recent Iron Butt rally, a member here entered with his new T12 and grenaded the engine due to the cct failure. It was repaired under warranty and sold on here with full disclosure.
