We've had a similar issue before, around the bolt holes IIRC.

Have a chat with Altrider first - you will find them helpful, just as long as the rack wasn't overloaded unduly.

I wonder what they are rated for. I sent them those pictures. I've had it loaded pretty good before. But was on the road only. These Ms. road are pretty damn lumpy though.

If you don't ride two up, pull the rear seat off and remove the riser for the rack, bolting the plate directly to the bike. Less moment arm vibration and less chance of future cracking.

Odds are good AltRider will replace it for free or minimal cost. Failing that, yes, you could have it welded. A good welder would reinforce the areas behind the cracks with some additional flat stock, welded to the main piece.

Any weight on the rack that hangs off the back will essentially act like a lever, flexing the rack back and forth as you ride. Aluminum fracture rates are distinct. There is no if, only when it will crack. Some designs place that when a long way out, others not so much.

I don't ride 2 up but I have a backrest mounted to my rear seat. It would be hard to do without it now.

I had the same problem they were even less helpful. Guys were bored at my brothers work and made me one out of steel for free.

AdV rider said tough crap, six months till they could get a replacement for me to buy, no discount. I only had raingear and stuff in it so not overloaded.

Those countersunk holes are just a weak spot, unfortunately.

Sorry to hear and see those failure issues. Maybe you had loose or over torqued bolts? Some of the complaints in the past centered on the beveled bolt holes being too thin. The side cracks are disconcerting though. It could be a weight distribution or tie down issue. I have had mine on the bike for 5 years with no issues. It's hard to believe I have had the bike that long. Lots of trips, on road & off, loaded for COBDR and Alaska (solo). Lots of trail riding. I either have my Nelson-Rigg 30L tail bag on (most of the time) or my 45L duffel. For both of the above trips the duffel probably weighed somewhere 40 pounds, but was half on the seat & half on the rack. Pretty much the same width of the big top plate of the rack. The tail bag is almost the same size as the rack too. The tail bag loaded might be about 10 pounds at most. It's nylon with just rain gear & gloves and maybe a jacket or 2 in it.

11 lbs.

Why on earth would anyone buy a rack that is rated for 11lbs.

I can stand on my nordic rack (literally)

I am searching for a rear rack and leery of the AltRiders based on breaks. Considering the SW Motech currently.
Are you able to use the Nomadic rack without removing passenger grab rails?

No removal of the factory rails or pannier mounts. I added this when my factory one broke. Its super thick aluminum.

Yeah heres a few pics:

to complement the above... #11

i did a mount check and lucky me i did all the measurements well ; this was the challenging part as tolerances were really at the 10th of mill...

I have used all the available 5 mounting points (yes there is an additional 5th hole hidden by a plastic cap just in case you didn't know) with 5 machined spacers (the two at back are 3 mm higher than front ones)
Those hold the bottom compartment (4.5 litres capacity); its back door (which later i covered in 3M carbon look) open/closes by 4 magnetized points at its four edges (20 Kg of pull...)

I did a satin finish to all the visible aluminium (i though initially to anodize... but man... that is VERY expensive...so i left the idea alone)

Here are some pics of the mount and the final result

Anyone know of a company who still makes matching passenger and rear rack combinations? Touratech and Altrider use to but now only offer rear racks.

Thanks for the appreciations.
Just to clarify that is not hand made. I did the project in CAD (tough part), hand it over for laser cutting and bending
and then i made the assembly and final touches.

I thought to eventually clone it and make some pieces...
@Tenman i think shipping would be overkill to USA (assuming you were serious..)
