Has anybody had luck using the Alt rider crash bars AND the OEM Yamaha lower bars together? They use the same mounting holes but Altrider bars go inside the bolts and OEM goes outside the holes so I'm hoping a longer bolt and a little bit of fabrication I can make both of these work together. Anybody been there tried that? And what skid plate do you like? Noobie to the site. Thx

I am using just the ALTRider bars. They work great, and I think they offer the best protection available. My favorite skid plate is made by Jaxon at Rideonadv (Tabasco here on the forum). I have the plate, and it is bullet proof. No connection to the sump on the bike, and oil changes are exceedingly easy.

I have experience with these crash bars, not with fitting the OEM ones to it though. I came down reasonably hard on my right side and the bars bent back and twisted up. On the right side the top part of the bar protrudes out a little and that protrusion takes the main force. This part of the bar bent up toward the side panel. The side connecting points are narrow to fit the OEM bolt holes and to enable the removal of the side panel stand out slightly wide. In a forward motion crash the the highest point of the bars hit first bent up continued to drag and bend the connecting bars back.
In defence, the bars stopped my lower legs being crushed and the bike was still ridable. The handle bars took a massive hit and didn't even bend. The bars are very well made and I doubt most bars could take that kind of force.
I have the opinion, most, if not all bars are light falls or drops only. The forces are massive on a big hit even for the super strong Altrider bars. I did, before the Altrider bars use these, http://www.off-the-road.de/en/XT-1200-Z/Protection/Crash-pads-XT-1200-Z.html. Never tested them in a crash though. I think this contact point and the handle bars will protect you from most offs. Just an opinion though and that dose not stand for much.

After seeing the Yamaha bars I'd stay away. They're flimsy. I put a hurt on on my Altrider's in CO this summer. They're bent, but still protecting the bike. Ask anyone who went on the ill fated first day trip up Imogene. Just bolt up the Altriders and drop away. Get their skid plate while you're at it. Rock solid stuff for all but the most extreme users. ::021::

You made a heck of a lasting impression on a lot of us that first day. Word got around that you were "dirt biking it" for the first time, and on a XT1200Z!
On Colorado mountain passes, no less! That's wild.
You gotta have some great memories, eh?
And yes, Altriders to the rescue. :)

Thanks guys. I have ordered the Alt rider crash bars and the skid plate. But am still going to try mounting the bars WITH the OEM lower engine guards. We'll see how it goes. And yes Imogene on a Super Ten could be a handful. I have done it probably 20 times on my KTM300 but that IS a true dirt bike.
Just a heads up that the Roll The Bones Rally is coming up in Texas in October for anyone interested.

AltRider skid plate works great but I have to remove most of the bolts to get to oil filter. Adds a lot of work and time to an oil change.

Ease of oil changes, incredible coverage, and a mounting system that is tied only to the frame were my primary reasons for chosing the RideonADV plate over the ALTRider plate.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. I had a great time all week...after I reduced the difficulty level a couple notches.

Technically I had done the Adventure Riders International novice school beforehand. At least when I go back this fall I'll have some experience to build on.

Re: Alt rider crash bars bent

My s10 sunk in the ground on the center stand. Went down on the throttle side. Bent my altrider crash bars in a 1/4" from the side panel front edge. I feel like they should have done a little better than that. This was pretty soft dirt. Can't get the cover off without taking the bars off now. If it goes down on them again they are gonna hit the cover. Another right side is $145.

There is a picture somewhere of the two sets of bars all woven together, looked good. Don't recall the difficulty level though. My bars have been down on pavement on the right, and dirt on the left, no change in shape.

I have read this before but my oil filters spin off without removing anything with a Altrider skid plate.

Don't have a photo, but I did get both OEM lower crash bars with upper light bar AND upper Alt Rider bars to coexist with only a wee bit of prying. Theymake for a very nice protection cage around the front end and I think add strength to each other as the load of impact is more widely spread. Went down once with this setup but VERY slow speed in a water crossing so I have no proof of my claims. BUT IT LOOKS GREAT!

Hello,

This discussion looks not finished :)

I am thinking to do the same, like there was a question in first message. Is it possible to add altrider crash bars with yamaha OEM crash bars?
