Kinda interested in what riders are using and the results they are getting and service intervals.

Everyone likes a poll don't they? :D

Never had issue with the stock oiled paper. Always nice and clean on the intakes to the valves.

I would say that most people run the stock filter and run them about 20K miles. With the million that I have changed I would say the stock filter can run probably 30+K miles depending on "off road" use.

I personally like the UNI, and is serviceable. They do make a performance difference with supporting mods.

We have also installed many BMC filters as well. They are similar to K&N but with more filters 'cotton' and an overall better filter than the K&N (IMOP) This filter is also serviceable

On a side note: next time you change your filter, make sure you push out (pop) out the two drain pins at the bottom of the 'dirty' side of the air box. You push them out from the inside of the air box. This will allow any water to quickly drain so it doesn't slosh around in the air box.

If I find a good deal on the stock filters, I'll buy a couple at a time. Otherwise, it's usually a HiFlow which a friend that ran her own shop suggested was comparable to OEM and a better price. I haven't seen anything to argue against that.

Hi Jaxon, I purchased the UNI filters from you. Got my curiosity when you mentioned “supporting mods”. Would you mind listing them?

20-30K miles sounds like a lot of miles for a stock filter, knocking the dust out every 5K or so? All depending on the riding conditions as mentioned.

I've read BMC offers two filters, one for racing one for street use. Do you know the difference ? I would think the racing one would be fine for street use, curious why two are offered ??
Do you know if the cleaning solution and oil treatment are the same as K&N's?

And lastly, do you leave the plug out of the air box? Maybe cover the hole with Gortex or something??

Thx

When you add UNI on top of this list you do see and feel a gain. Muffler/header/PCV&AT/air box mod/flash. Even on a stock bike, they are great filters.

Im just guessing, but I would think the standard is the one Ive been installing and "race" anything is probably much thinner "filtering" media to let more air in, a slight bit less restriction on a race engine.

Yes the cleaning methods are virtually the same as the K&N.

No, I push the plugs and leave them out totally. These plugs are on the 'dirty' side of the air box. Means nothing if some dust gets sucked up though those two small holes. That air still has to pass though the filter over to the 'clean side' before entering into the motor. So if you ride in driving rain for hours and a few drops make it into the air box, they simply fall to the bottom and drip out. And riders like myself that cross deep streams and sometimes do dumb stuff off-road on the Tenere, there is much more chance of a bit more water entering in the air box. With the two pins pulled the water just drains out immediately. These pins are totally stock and installed by yamaha. This is not a modification. I always pop them out for customers for the "just in case" factor.

Stock filter every 26,000 miles during valve check works fine for me. Even though we are dirty and dusty and dry as a bone here in Colorado, not very dirty at 26,000 miles.
I agree with you Ron, most stock filters I see are being replaced at about 26K all look about the same. Not really that dirty really.

Wrote this on another thread.
Returning two HiFlow filters because they don’t fit. With the bottom seated, the top won’t fall into place like the OEM does.
When I apply some force, the airbox twists to accommodate so that the cover no longer fits. I guess OEM for me.
