A TPMS question

I'm wanting to get a Cobra TPMS. Am I to understand that there are risks to using the cap-style senders on the stock rubber tire stems?
Thanks!

Ive been running the screw on "china" brand TPMS for about 3000 miles and no issues. I asked my tire guy and he had nothing but good to say (old school place been in business since the 70's).

Best $50 I think Ive spent on the bike. With no chain to oil I was getting lazy on checking the pressure.

Yes, especially if off road or where there may be sticks or other debris.

This is what I have. Been way off road, burried in sand, mud, 14,000 feet, submerged in water from crossings and high speed open highways. Super impressed with how it has held up. The charge lasted about 6000 miles and the batteries are still good in the tire units. I would buy it again.

I don't go off road, but I have had a TPMS on for a couple 3 years and have done at least 15k road miles, ranging from slow back roads to autobhans. I had one problem with a very tiny air leak, about 1psi per day at the valve seat, but the valve was OE and at least 5 years old, the TPMS could have done me a favour showing it up, rather than being the cause.
A heads up, when you turn the bike on the display will show the pressure at when you turned the bike off, it needs to get up to 12mph/20kph to recalibrate. If your parking place got quite cold over night, in the morning the display may show a drop of 3 or 4 psi, but it will pick up after the tyres warm with riding.

I was under the impression that the TPMs that attached to the valve like the Garmin ones mentioned above needed metal valve stems

Are you guys attaching them to the original rubber stems?

If so, any problems?

I am just using the original rubber stems but mine is not the Garmin one either...No issues to report.

I just installed the cheap Amazon ones referenced in this thread. I have the original FoboBike TPMS but it's been acting up and I didn't want to spring for the newer version. I must say that the sensors for the Amazon unit are tiny compared to the monstrosities that came with the FoboBike setup. I have no concern that these little things are going to cause any issue with my rubber valve stems.

That’s the system I’m getting. Should be here tomorrow. Glad to know there’s no problems.
The instructions are not the best...the missing bit of info is that once installed you must ride the bike for several revolutions of the tire for the wheel sensors to wake up & sync with the head unit. Make sure to do this before entering custom high/low values. Afterwards it will display the last recorded pressures when you go for your next ride...then after a few wheel revolutions the sensors wake up & display current readings....it automatically cycles between pressure & temp. I am still on the orig lithium batteries + they ship with 2 replacement batteries. The head unit is a little hard to read when wearing polarized sun glasses. If you have any problems just call Greg @ Cyclops..he's very helpful.

Running rubber stems. No issues for the 3000 miles I've had them on.

I fitted mine some time in 2017, I estimate that I have done about 15000 road and a little hard gravel miles since then. The stems show no sign of cracks.
