Curious about the zip-ties on the spokes. I think it's the first time I've seen something like that. What purpose do they serve on a properly laced up wheel?

If a spoke comes loose the cable ties stop them from flailing around and either breaking or causing damage to the bike.

You haven't come across that technique yet? Interesting. I haven't done mine, but I check them for snugness every 5k or so. Didn't prevent me from replacing one a few months ago. Second one in 80,000 miles.
