I have used Purolator One filters for years and never had an issue. I'll continue using them and if an issue comes up, which seems highly unlikely, I'll deal with it at that time.

+1. I put 120K on a ST11, have 57K on my ST13 and 30K on the FZ1 with no engine related issues. Purolator filters on all. I have no qualms in using them over OEM.

Plus the gold colored can is KEWL! :D

YMMV,

I doubt there is technically much difference between the oil filters but for the difference of a few quid I'd rather be comfortable that should anything happen there could be no quible.

On the oil front my dealer (in the UK) was happy to put an oil other than yamlube in at its service. He also said that it wasn't necessary to have a fully synthetic oil as its not a high reving sports engine. We went for a semi synthetic.
My combo is Rotella 15-40 non-synthetic and Purolator One filters. Top rate and still economical. I don't remember ever using manufacturer label for either. Always figured those were relabeled anyway. Seems like I'm getting double-dipped. One of my many odd quirks, I suppose.

I think the Yamaha oil filter part # is 5GH-13440-20
which crosses to :
Purolator ML16817
Bosch 3300
Walmart ST3300
Emgo 10-82240
Hiflo 204
Fram 6017A
In Dallara's listing of parts, the WalMart Super Tech #s are 7317 for the longer filter and 6607 for the shorter one (2.5" I think). I got a couple of the shorter ones since the longer ones are reported to interfere with some of the aftermarket skid plates. Where'd you get the ST3300 # Bob?

Cal Sci's Motorcycle Info site has been around for years, and their info, research, and recommendations are some of the very best on the internet. I refer to their pages often, and their oil filter list is one of the most complete.

On my list I wanted to gather the names and part numbers of *QUALITY* filters specifically for the Yamaha Super Tenere. For instance, I wouldn't use a Fram filter on my worst enemy's lawnmower, so no Fram filters appear on my list. You may also note that my list includes part numbers for excellent quality filters from other Japanese motorcycle manufacturers (which are actually all made by Denso in this case), as well as the interchangeable part number for a Triumph motorcycle filter. Cal Sci's does not list these part numbers.

Also, on another thread I noted that the longer 3.25-inch filters might have interference issues with certain skid plates, and my recommendation is that if you are running *ANY* skid plate you stick with the shorter 2.5-inch filters.

Last but not least, if you do a little careful shopping around the internet and/or e-Bay you can easily find the current, stock, factory, OEM Yamaha oil filters - part # 5GH-13440-20 - in bulk for as little as little as about $6.00 each, shipped. By bulk I am referring to a case, which is 10 filters. These Yamaha filters are, as I said, are made by Denso in Japan (Denso part # 115010-6370), and are some of the very finest available in the world. Needless to say, no warranty hassles with using them, and at $6.00 a piece certainly they are fairly price competitive with brands like Purolator Pure One, Mobil 1, etc.

Just FYI...

Another thing to consider is not all filters are the same case thickness. A lot of guys on the Goldwing group go to Walmart and buy their filters there that may look just like the OEM filter. May work just as well too, but a few guys have hit a piece of metal on the road, a rock whatever and it punctures the filter. The Honda filter is near double the wall thickness of some aftermarket filters. I'd bet the Yamaha follows suit too. No use taking a chance, for the price difference not worth it.

Good point, and another reason to stick with motorcycle specific filters, especially with the Super Tenere's fairly vulnerable and exposed oil filter position.

And just for the record, at this time Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha *ALL* source their oil filters from Denso (I have current examples of all three here), so you can expect they will be of similar, if not identical, construction. I don't know about Suzuki simply because I don't have a Suzuki filter handy, nor a quick and easy way to source one at the moment. I will check into those in the future, however.

I know I will be staying with the Yamaha OEM if at all possible, and if not then I will try to find one of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer branded Denso filters as a second source. My plan is only to fall back on Mobil 1 or Purolator (or others) if I am simply stuck somewhere without access to the Jap Denso product.

Just my two yen... YMMV. ;)

Care to share where you have found the OEM filters for this price?

Sounds a lot like the deal I got, and I sourced the case I have off e-Bay... Of course, that was over six months ago, and at that time I believe the filters came out to right at $6.00 a piece, including shipping.

The K&N off the shelf down at the CycleGear I frequent was $14.99. Based on the ebay tip above, I found an outfit...ENL Sales...on ebay that sells cases for $68.58, including shipping. I ordered a case from them.

ENL Sales is the same place I sourced to on ebay for the $67 price. Not sure where the $68.58 price comes from. Still, a good price!!!!

Here is a link to info about oil filters and their construction: http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/index.shtml
Calsci weighs in on oil and oil filters: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Consumables.html
I had a canister filter on my Vmax('92) and recently switched over to a spin on filter using a aftermarket conversion kit. I now use the mobile1 filter M1-110.

Just to note...

Some long time ago I used to place a lot of my own faith in the Toby Creek filter comparison (first link above), and often relayed it to folks when asked about filters. That said, I personally can no longer place a lot of credence in its info - despite the fact he basically recommends OEM filters for all his bikes except his Ducati (http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/mychoices.shtml) - simply because it is so dated, and due to that, now inaccurate.

A good example is his discussion of the Honda OEM filter (http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/honda.shtml), which he describes as being a Toyo Roki. On that same page he adds that Kawasaki filters are identical... But note that his "Evaluation Date" for these filters was "April 1999", some 12 years ago. I have current Honda and Kawasaki OEM filters sitting right here in my hand, and both are made by Denso, and say so right on the case.

Understand I am not discounting any of the wonderful info that's presented on those pages out of hand, just noting that they are now far out of date and some of the filter info is inaccurate because of that. That was the article that first got me to cutting some oil filters apart and looking for myself. Sadly, I never took any pictures, etc. There are other discrepancies due to date in the evaluations there, as neither the Mobil 1 nor Purolator brand filters currently available are constructed anything like what he illustrates. But then he evaluated them in July, 2003 and December, 1999 respectively.

Just FYI... :)

Just as an aside I thought some here might enjoy the following article detailing exactly how these oil filters work - (http://www.shoclub.com/lubrication-oil/lubrication-oilpart2.htm) - as well as it having a lot of interesting information on oil temperature, magnets in oiling systems, proper installation of spin-on filters, etc.

Oh, and BTW, both the V-6 and V-8 Ford SHO engines were designed and manufactured by guess who?

Yamaha ;D

Yamaha also currently produces engines for Toyota, as well as some other auto makers.

Gah, missed that somehow. I remembered seeing a oil filter comparo somewhere, which turned out to be the Calsci tests that I found later. I should have went back and reread the first link, which at that point I probably would have deleted it.
