42000 miles, no valve clearance checks and 23P cct

So as you know I've just bought a 2011 S10 and am working my way through servicing it for peace of mind. It has full service history but the invoices don't show a valve clearance check. After reading the forums I checked the cct and it's the dreaded 23P oem one.

Now having just got it, I haven't noticed any power issues or crazy weird noises, although if it has an unusual sound I wouldn't know what it was like before.

Question to you all... Should I do the valve clearance myself now to be certain they're within tolerance and should I change to an ape mcct now too pre-emptively?

I'd rather not do either right now if the bike is fine, what issues would I have if the valves are out of tolerance or the cct went? Is it worth the cost and agro now or shall I wait for 52000 miles and do it then?

Thanks

I would check the valve clearance, you clearly worry about it. I would change the CCT later (or not at all) when there are no problems.

Checking the valve clearance is reasonably easy job, adjusting is definitely more work.

I second this.
I personally wouldn't worry about it, but since it's on your mind and you need to know you can trust your bike won't leave you stranded, might as well do the check. You'll know your bike so much better after your done, too. Leave the cct until it tells you it needs changing... you'll know.

Yes. Check them. Adjust if necessary. I might look at a Graves MCCT. I’ve installed them all and it a better quality part.

BTW- if you do the work keep all your numbers and notes for the future. Also you will need all this info if valve(s) are out. Also excellent info to pass along to the next future owner.
If you have a shop do the work, I always ‘suggest’ (it was me I would demand) asking for the same info for the same reasons when you pay the bill and pick up the bike.

I haven't ever worried about checking them before but it was a common thing I saw people talking about on here and I know if I got a dealer to do it, it would cost me a fortune. No issues doing it myself though

40,000-60,000 miles seems to be where the older CCT will let go if it’s going to. Yeah, check the valves and update the tensioner.

i bought a APE manual cct 2 yrs ago was £102 in the UK my mechanic charged £40 to swop them out best money i spent bike at 24000 was a little rattely but been dead quite the last 2 and a half years and no adjustment needed either,

i,m keeping my xt1200 had it for 8 yrs and its a keeper, so did my valve clearance at 28000 they were all in tolearance, but if i bought a bike with 42000 and not been done yes i would do them especially as you say you can do it yourself, and gen 1 with 42000 get that cct changed

Thanks Rob. I know mine is a 2011 and this says 2012 but is this the same as the one you bought? If it fits a 1, surely it fits an 11 too? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273283065410?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=FdZ-WIosQCa&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=sUVqRHUoTZa&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

I thought they updated the cct for later models and the updated one is the replacement for all earlier versions? Think I’d just fit a later updated one, at least it’s of a known quality.

There have been a few updates of the CCT! My Gen1 now has a Gen2 updated OEM part fitted. Is definitely quieter. Would have no issues fitting a MCCT either.

Have to say I’ve been on quite a few bike forums over the last twenty or so years, and CCTs are a pretty common subject on most. Especially Honda forums…. But in truth I’ve only ever replaced one, my Blackbird at about 40k miles, although everyone said it’d need doing at 20k, and that ONLY the upgraded pattern part by the recognised specialist was worth fitting in it’s place. Said specialist part only lasted 12k. Also had the same with stator amd reg rec, where again his supposed upgraded parts barely lasted a year. His reply to my question as to what part was specifically ‘upgraded’ gained a responce thats not printable. Needless to say I’ve not bought from him since.
If an OE part has done 42k, in my book thats good enough to justify buying the same again, unless an alternative comes with a better ’Guarenteed’ life.
