After a good night's sleep, I awoke to make myself some coffee and check on the status of my drying clothes on the paracord.
There hadn't been much of a breeze so they were still damp.........................no-worries! I'll just leave them to dry while we're out exploring all day.

Ron was just waking up as I started re-hydrating some sort of breakfast.
We had noticed the two previous nights, the Lady-Couple across from us had a campfire going. We hadn't done so, but other campers sprinkled around the grounds also had fires.
I spotted a small pile of various sized firewood that was leftover in the empty campsite next to ours. I made a few trips over to grab it all and bring it to our site.
We figured we'd have a fire on our last night at this site before we leave.
One of the ladies across from us must have watched me, cause she comes walking over to us with two big pieces of wood and says "Do you guys want some more wood?" "We are leaving today and still have all this wood left" She said we were welcome to come over and grab whatever we wanted..................We did, and thanked them for the offer!
I offered to pay them something for the wood, but she said they gathered it up in the forest and didn't cost them anything. Score!

We geared-up and headed out for the day.
There wasn't really a plan or a route to follow, just a few areas that Ron highlighted on his NAV that looked promising.
Off we went down Hwy-21

We turned onto dirt near the Warm Springs Guard Station for a little exploring along the Payette River.
IMG_0058.JPG

We took the ride up the hill to check out this forest Airstrip (we found lots of these scattered all around the Idaho mountains)
IMG_0059.JPG

After coming back down the hill, we continued on until the road ended at a decent sized dirt Berm.
We decided to ride over it and explore this abandoned section of "Old Hwy-21"

IMG_0060.JPG

On the map, it looked like it connected at the other end with new Hwy-21........................it did not. Sorta, but not really.
We would have had to ride down a steep-rocky slope into a deep ditch, and then try to get the bikes up the other embankment and onto the highway. We chose to turn around and come back out the way we went in.

The old road used to cross the river here with a Bridge. It is long since gone, with just a few pieces of timber left at the river-bank.
IMG_0061.JPG

IMG_0062.JPG

We rode a short distance farther down Hwy-21, and once again turned onto dirt at FR542.
Ron had a bit of trouble with his NAV at the junction with Archie creek Rd. It kept wanting to route us to the left up that road, and not where we wanted to go.
As we were checking the roads, two guys rolled up on a BMW 1200GS and a KTM going the opposite direction. They obviously came from the direction we wanted to go, so we asked them "This way is open all the way through?" They both looked at each other and then one of them says "Well, yeah, it's open all the way" and that's all they said before taking off again.

OK, Cool! We rolled on in that direction, which quickly became a steep climb as it switch-backed its way up to the top of a Ridge. The road snaked along the edge of this section and it was absolutely stunning!
There were some fantastic views, although a bit smoky (this would be a theme for the majority of my Trip).

As we made our way down the other side of the Ridge we came to a section of the road where a culvert was washed-out.
It was a mildly steep drop into the creek and up the other side, but it looked do-able. (I didn't get any pictures of it, but I have GoPro footage. Video to come later)
Ron went first, and then me. We both handled it with ease.

Some ways down the road we came upon the backside of a "Road Closed" sign..................Funny, it wasn't closed at the other end.

IMG_0067.JPG

We continued south. I'm not really sure which roads we took, as there is a spider's-web network of roads and trails in this area.
We were flying through the forest! The road was flat and wide and curvy. There was just enough loose gravel in the turns to slide the back end out as I throttled towards the next one.
This was a super fun section! It was a blast to ride with no luggage on the bikes.

After some time we came upon an intersection where there was a newer Jeep parked along with a guy on a BMW 800GS.
They flagged us down and asked if we had any spare fuel. Apparently the young Couple in the Jeep got lost in the network of roads and was freaking-out cause they only had a quarter-tank left and didn't know their way out.
Ron mapped the shortest route out to Idaho City, which was the closest fuel (it was about 40 miles) and sent them on their way.
We chatted with the guy on the BMW for a bit, and asked him about Atlanta. We were considering exploring around there, and asked if they had any food or anything in town?
He claimed he just came from there, and said the town was empty................No businesses were open. We were kinda disappointed cause we were hoping to get lunch there.

We decided to head that direction anyway, as it wasn't that far from where we currently were.
We said goodbye to BMW-guy and continued on our way.

This Dam is on the Middle Fork Boise River, not far from Atlanta.
IMG_0068.JPG

As we rolled into Town and rounded the first corner we come to this place, with lit Beer signs in the windows!
You've gotta be kidding me!!!
How did BMW-guy not notice this place?? "Road Karma" was certainly smiling on us!
IMG_0072.JPG

We wandered in and sat down...........This place is awesome!
We were the only ones in there, and we thanked the lady behind the Bar for being open!

IMG_0071.JPG

IMG_0073.JPG

Must be Italian!
IMG_0069.JPG

I can't remember which Burger I ordered, but up to this point it was in solid first-place!

We spent some amount of time in there, relaxing, looking around, taking in the atmosphere of this place.
After we payed-up and climbed back on the bikes, we explored around the town a little bit.

Found another remote forest Airstrip.

IMG_0078.JPG

We made our way back out of town and along the River.

IMG_0080.JPG

We headed west to make our way out to Hwy-21. After a ways we turned onto a connector-road "Road Creek Rd".
It was a steep, narrow, rutted climb up the ridge, and almost as soon as I started up the hill I got stung right in the chest!
Some stinging-insect had crawled into my open jacket and got me. It had been quite warm, so I'd been riding with my jacket partially unzipped.

After stopping to remove all my gear to make sure said insect was not still in there with me, I continued on up the Ridge.

The road quickly descends down the other side to meet up with FR-327.

IMG_0081.JPG

We rode this all the way out to Hwy-21 and turned north. We figured we would get fuel in Lowman at the Mercantile, before heading back to Camp for the day.
This was a fun ride! The road twists and turns as it makes its way up the pass. Hairpin after hairpin curve with very little traffic!

In no time at all we pulled into the Lowman Mercantile only to find it closed.....................Nobody around, fuel-pumps not working, nothing!
At this point we had already covered more than 200 miles since last fuel.
We sat for a few minutes while we mulled-over our options...................
If we continued in the direction of Camp, the closest fuel was in Stanley, 58 miles away.
If we went back to Idaho-City that was 33 miles away.
My Garmin said that closest fuel was in Garden Valley, 23 miles away. I knew I could make it there. Ron wasn't sure as his tank is about a gallon less than mine, and we'd been getting similar fuel mileage.
I had my two MSR fuel-bottles with me so we chose the 23-mile option. Ron ended up making it with "Low Fuel" warning flashing on his bike for most of the way.
We did the quick fuel and turnaround to head back the way we came.
Banks-Lowman Rd was another fun blast with our unloaded bikes, now full of fuel.

It was an uneventful ride back to Camp.
We settled in with some food, some adult beverages, and our Campfire.

IMG_0102.PNG

Today would mainly be a "Transfer Day", so I didn't get a lot of pictures.
We would be leaving one Base-Camp, and travelling to the next one.

I woke up fairly early. I knew I had a lot of packing to do, and I still had clothes hanging on the line to fold away. (they were all dry)
Made some coffee, and some breakfast. While that was re-hydrating I packed away most of the items from inside the tent, then pulled the tent down and packed it away.
It went quicker than I was expecting, and by this time Ron was doing the same.

Before long we were both ready to go. We geared-up and set off to the main Highway.
It was sort-of an overcast, hazy day as we made our way past Stanley and headed into the twisty river-road heading east.
We stopped for Fuel at a lonely outpost about halfway between Stanley and Challis on Hwy-75, and then continued north meeting up with US Hwy-93.

As we rode along there were darker sections of sky, and it wasn't as hot as it has been.
There was a great section of sweeping curves north of Challis on our way, and very little traffic at all. We were enjoying the easy ride!

We were getting a little hungry when we reached Salmon, so we got Fuel at the corner, and then stopped at a Subway for a quick lunch.
While we were there, we checked the weather-radar apps and saw we might encounter some rain as we continued north.
At this time Ron was also in contact with a couple of long-distance friends who just happened to be traveling through Idaho, and headed south in our general direction.
We weren't sure if we would run into them or not. They were planning on turning on Hwy-43 at Chief Joseph pass, and we would most likely miss them.

We finished our lunch and headed north.
Just as we were starting up the steep-curvy Pass, we ran into a mild rain shower.
We took it easy as the road was wet and slick. Just after we crested the Pass we spotted the other two riders on their BMWs.
We turned around and all met at the overlook near the top. The rain eased up while we chatted and shared little bits of our adventures with each other.

After a short while, we all continued on our own direction.

Before long as we were nearing Darby MT, I wanted to stop at this Location (made famous from the TV Series) to get a couple pictures.
I have not watched any yet, but my wife says she loved the show.

IMG_0087.JPG

IMG_0088.JPG

Just up the road in town we came upon these fantastic Metal-Art statues for sale.
We just had to stop and get some shots of them!

IMG_0091.JPG

A pack of hungry Velociraptors!

IMG_0095.JPG

And this strange evil-looking Gargoyle? thing............................
IMG_0093.JPG

Even this Raging Bull, complete with "Oysters"
I'm sure these were lovingly hand-fabricated with care.............................
IMG_0097.JPG

After a short break with the Metal-Art, we continued north.
We got Fuel one more time when we reached Lolo MT, and then headed west on US Hwy-12.
It was a bit more smoky in this area, as there was a current fire just up the road near the Pass.

We continued on, and quickly made it up Lolo Pass, and down the other side

What us twisty-road Riders love to see!
IMG_0098.JPG

It wasn't long before we arrived at our next Base-Camp Destination, at Powell Campground.
We found our Site, and set-up. The Campground is right on the Lochsa River, and right across the street is a River-access foot-path.

IMG_0101.JPG

We decided to head over to the Lochsa Lodge next door for Dinner instead of fixing a meal at Camp.
I had the "Smoked Trout Dinner Salad" and some Onion-Rings!
It was so tasty!
IMG_0099.JPG

After Dinner and some use of their wifi and air-conditioning, we headed back to Camp for the evening.
I rode back up to the Lodge and bought a Shower ($10)
It was a bit pricey, but it beat the "Dude-Wipes" tent-showers I've been using, and there was unlimited hot-water.
I felt so refreshed afterwards, and relaxed with some whiskey the rest of the night.

Here's the "Relive" video of our route today.

Day-8, Thursday July 29th
125 Miles

IMG_0120.PNG

We woke up and made Breakfast at Camp.
After unloading all our luggage and securing it, we decided to take a break from longer-distance riding today.
We hung-out a bit longer than usual while the Sun rose through the smoke-haze in the trees.

IMG_0103.JPG

IMG_0104.JPG

Ron needed to re-supply some food items, and also wanted to sort out his leaking camp-pad with possibly a new one.
We set out for the day, and headed to Missoula for some shopping and a lunch-stop that Ron wanted to take me to.

It wasn't until we were almost to Lolo when I realized I forgot to turn on my tracker-app, so I missed the first 46-miles from the day's miles.
We continued on into downtown. Once we neared the lunch destination, we attempted to find a parking-space.
After locating an empty one, we tried to use the kiosk and had a bit of trouble figuring it out. Then we realized we were in a "Residential" zone and weren't allowed to park there.
We found another empty space around the next corner, and finally were able to pay to park there.
Next we walked the two blocks and had an awesome lunch at "The Oxford"

IMG_0105.JPG

They serve 1/2-lb or 1-lb Burgers, single or double!
It is possible to order a 2-lb Burger! I opted for the 1/2-lb Bacon, Mushroom, and Swiss OX-Burger.
This was the absolute BEST Burger of the whole trip! Hands-Down.

IMG_0106.JPG

This place is famous for being a lot of different things, all under one roof.
Bar, Café, Gambling-Room, and Strip-Club! Even a nice collection of Rifles above the Bar. I'm not sure if they still operate the strip-club, at least not on a Thursday afternoon...................

After lunch we headed over to Walmart so Ron could re-supply some backpacker meals and a couple other items. Since there was an REI in town, we rode over there next. Surprisingly they had very little to choose from in the realm of Camp-Pads, so we headed over to Sportsman's Warehouse next. They actually had quite a few in stock, and Ron ended up walking out with a new Klymit Pad.

It was a hot day, and even hotter trudging around the city in traffic.
I was happy when we were finally making our way out of town, back towards Camp.
We topped up on Fuel in Lolo, and headed west on Hwy-12.

Since we'd passed by it twice already, I had claimed that I wanted to stop at the "Memorial Cedar Grove" on our way back to Camp to take a nice quiet walk through the Forest.

We did stop, and it ended up being peaceful and relaxing.
There was nobody else there. Ron and I had the place to ourselves!

After the quiet stroll, we rode the short distance back to Camp.
Ron rode next-door to Lochsa Lodge to use their wifi. I decided it was still hot so I walked down to the River and layed in it for a bit to cool off and rinse off.
It was so refreshing!

After a good soaking, I rode over to the Lodge to buy a couple bags of Ice to chill some beverages.
I don't recall making any dinner that night, as I was probably still full from the huge burger-lunch.

IMG_0141.PNG

We followed our usual routine of coffee (for me) and some sort of backpacker-meal breakfast at Camp.
Then it was time to gear-up and ride the "Twelve"!
I had been looking forward to riding this stretch of highway for the entire trip.................and since we were base-camping at Powell for another night, we got to ride it "Naked"!

The Road did not disappoint! It was early. Temps were mild, and there was very little traffic. We were able to attack the pavement, and quickly fell into a rhythm.
I was loving this! Sweeper after sweeper, curve after curve for days!
You keep thinking this must come to an end soon, but it just keeps going and going!
As we made our way along, we could feel the temperature climbing. The route gradually drops in elevation as you head west.

Eventually we reached Selway Rd. We turned south here.
This road is wide, smooth gravel. It was a welcome break as the sheer number of curves on the 12 start to wear you out after riding it hard for distance.
There was quite a bit of dust from this gravel though, so we spread out a little. Often riding out of comms range.

Eventually we reached Falls Point Rd, and the Bridge over the Selway River.

IMG_0122.JPG

The original plan was to ride this into Elk City, and make a loop back around on the 14, but DOT reports and Forest Service alerts stated this road was closed at the first switchbacks for repair efforts.
We rode past a Campground and Picnic area, and decided to take a rest/water/snack break there.

IMG_0123.JPG

After chilling out in the shade for a bit, we made our way back to Selway Falls (which is more "Rapids" than Falls)

IMG_0126.JPG

IMG_0128.JPG

IMG_0130.JPG

There appears to be remnants of an old Dam that was once here.
Not much left of it now.

IMG_0136.JPG

IMG_0137.JPG

There was also this hand-operated cable "Tramway" that looks to be able to carry two people across the river nearby.
We did NOT try it out!

We leisurely made our way back on Selway Rd, heading north towards the 12.
Keeping distance to avoid the dust, I would occasionally drop way back to take a picture and then give-er the throttle to roost my way back up to where Ron was. There was plenty of loose gravel to get sideways in!

IMG_0139.JPG

Eventually we met back up with the 12.
We continued west and had planned on getting some lunch in either Kooskia or Kamiah.
It was getting pretty hot, and by the time we reached Kooskia it was 105-degrees air temp!
We made the decision to not go any further, and found a nice little Café on Main Street.
There were very few people in the place, and the service was really slow, but we didn't mind at all................................we just soaked up the cool A/C while we sat.
We decided to eat a light lunch, and split a Reuben Sandwich.
Since this would be our last night at Powell, we were planning to splurge and have a nice Dinner at the Lodge and we certainly didn't want to spoil that.
We took our time and lingered as long as we could, sitting in the cool of the Café long after we had finished our food. The staff didn't seem to mind, as there were only a few patrons in there to tend to.
When it was finally time for us to depart and brave the heat outside, we took turns using the bathroom sink to soak our "Cool-Vests" before heading outside.

We topped up Fuel in town and then quickly hit the road running!
I was happy to have the cool-vest on in these temps, but they only work when you're moving.......................and move we did!
We didn't waste any time getting out of town and heading back up the highway. Then it was full-tilt all the way!
I honestly don't remember much of the ride back to Powell as we raced eastward on the 12, other than it was fast! And it was fun!
I'm not sure if it was the extra heat in the pavement, or if it's just the nature of these tires when pushed for as long as I did, but the rear E07-Dakar gets a bit squirmy when throttling hard out of the curves while leaned over. It still felt predictable though, so I just kept in it.
It seemed like no time at all went by and we were already back at Camp!
To quote Ron's words................"We flogged those Bikes like they owed us money!"

It was still quite hot after shutting down and removing our riding-gear.
It didn't take us long. We figured the best thing to do was jump in the River!
The water was cool and refreshing. You could feel your energy returning as it carried the excess heat from your body!
The River is quite shallow, so we stacked-up and moved a few rocks around to create a slightly deeper pool for us to soak in. This worked well, and we hung out in the River for quite some time.

After the relaxing soak we returned to our tents to dry off and change clothes. We pre-loaded some luggage back onto the bike in preparation for the next morning, and then made our way over to the Lodge for Dinner.

IMG_0140.JPG

The Lodge was busy, but we were seated in no time.
We enjoyed a bottle of wine and Ribeye dinners as we sat and recalled how epic this Adventure has been thus far!

IMG_0143.JPG

IMG_0144.JPG

It was everything we hoped it would be, and an awesome way to end our last day at Powell Campground.
I hadn't originally planned on dessert, but New-York Cheesecake was mentioned topped with local Huckleberries................I couldn't resist!
Ron and I split it.

IMG_0145.JPG

Before making our way back over to our campsite, I bought my wife a jar of local Huckleberry-Syrup and a sticker for myself.

Day-10, Saturday July 31st
267 Miles

IMG_0155.PNG

Today we were leaving Powell Campground and heading farther north.
I didn't tell Cap'n Ron where we were going, but only that the next two days would take us right up near the Canada Border.
In the excitement of us getting on the road, I forgot to turn on the tracker-app once again and didn't capture the first 46 miles of the route.

The bikes were heavily loaded once again, and they felt strange at first after riding them "Naked" for a couple days.
We set out heading west on the 12, and took it easy to start with. It wasn't long before we got the feel for them again and picked up the pace.
This is such a fun road, I was happy to be riding this stretch again..................loaded or not!

IMG_0147.JPG

I knew we had some miles to cover today, and we settled in to a nice rhythm of the curves.
Ron led the first section, and before long we arrived in Kooskia.

I took the lead as we turned northward towards Orofino.
We were just commenting to each other on comms how we had ridden that stretch of Hwy-12 three times now at "extra-legal" speeds without spotting even one LEO or even so much as a hint of a "Performance Award"........................
I was just about to Kamiah and probably doing around 60 (I think the speed limit along there is 45?) when a State-Trooper coming the opposite way "Lit Me Up"!
I immediately let off the throttle and slowed down some. Ron was a few hundred yards behind me, and announced over the comms that the Trooper lit him up too.
I slowed and started looking for a place to pull over. I figured our luck had just ran out!
I asked Ron if he could see him coming, or if he saw him turn around?
Ron said he could not see him yet, and by that time Ron was right behind me.
We happened to be right in front of a KOA, so we quickly ducked into their Complex and rode between the buildings all the way to the back.
We sat back there for around 10 minutes, and could see the main road from across a large field, but we never saw the State Police Car come past.
By this time we figured the Trooper had probably given us a visual "Warning" to slow down, and had never turned around.
We counted our blessings and returned to the main road to continue on our way.
"Road Karma" had shined on us once again!

We topped up fuel in Kamiah and rode north to Orofino, where we turned onto Dent Bridge Road.
This narrow, winding road climbed up steeply with lots of tight turns.
It mellowed out for awhile before dropping sharply toward Dworshak Reservoir.
A series of sharp curves brings you down to Bridge-Level.
It was in this area where we encountered the worst smoke of the entire trip.
It was thick in the air, and burned your eyes and throat.

We took a few pictures, but didn't linger for very long!

There's a Bridge down there somewhere!
IMG_0150.JPG

IMG_0148.JPG

IMG_0152.JPG

Dent Bridge, with an Osprey-Nest at the top of the Tower.
IMG_0153.JPG

We stayed on Dent Bridge Road all the way to Elk River, where we Joined up with Hwy-8 and then to Hwy-3 which we rode all the way to St Maries.
It was really hot during the middle part of the day. Temps were around 105 degrees when we pulled into Zips Drive-in for lunch.
We lingered a while to cool off while we ate. The A/C was cool, and the Milkshakes were great!
Before we left, we soaked our cool-vests again before walking back out into the heat of the day......................

We fueled up in town, and got moving as quick as we could.
The cool-vests helped take the edge off the excess heat.
We were now heading east on St. Joe River Road. This is a fun stretch of highway, with lots of sweeper-curves and even some tighter ones.
The road follows the River as it cuts its way through the mountains.
There was less smoke in the air along here compared to earlier in the day
Our destination for the day was Avery Idaho. It was mostly an uneventful ride along the River, except for some dickhead in a diesel-truck decided to try and "Race" Ron when we pulled out to pass him.
He got away with it once, and Ron slotted back in behind him. The next straightaway he tried again, but Ron got the jump on him and he was no match for the mighty V-Strom 650!
I told Ron over comms that I could get in front and hold him up if he couldn't get it done this time, as I have a bit more grunt........................ I didn't have any trouble getting by the diesel-dude.

Shortly after that we rolled into Avery.
I took the lead and led us to our accommodations for the night.
I had booked this Cabin way back in January. The caretaker was gracious enough to leave the A/C running for us, and we were extremely grateful given the outside temps we encountered today.

IMG_0156.JPG

Just as we were rolling up to park next to the Cabin, I felt a sharp Sting on my arm!
I had been riding with my sleeves open as much as they would to let some air in, and a Yellowjacket flew in there at some point. It got me right in the fore-arm!
I quickly yanked my jacket off and shook it out onto the ground.
Ron says "I'm glad I'm seeing this with my own eyes. I was beginning to think you were faking it getting stung so often"

Not much I can do about it at this point.
We brought our gear inside, and relaxed in the cool-cool A/C for a bit.
The caretaker knocked on the door and said if we needed anything they were next-door.

IMG_0159.JPG

Ron took the Bedroom downstairs in the back.

IMG_0157.JPG

I took the Loft upstairs!

IMG_0160.JPG

IMG_0162.JPG

I went next door and asked the owners if there was any laundry facilities. She said no, and didn't know of a laundromat in town either
Since it was "Laundry-Day" again, I made due with using the Bathtub to wash and rinse all my clothes as well as take a nice refreshing shower!
Ron did the same.

We strung up paracord clothes-lines and used the box-fan to dry everything.

IMG_0163.JPG

We also did a full disassemble, clean, and refresh of our Helmets. Inside and out!

IMG_0164.JPG

Washed and clean!
IMG_0165.JPG

As the Sun was going down, the temps were dropping to a more comfortable level.
I strolled outside to get a view of the Sunset over the St. Joe River.

IMG_0166.JPG

There was someone else's name on our Cabin when we arrived.
I changed it to something more appropriate.

IMG_0168.JPG

After dinner we relocated upstairs to the front-Loft to watch a couple movies with some adult-beverages.

Long after dark we had a pretty intense Thunderstorm move over the area.
It lasted for about 3 hours, and unleashed a deluge of extremely hard rainfall!
I haven't experience rain that strong in quite a long time. We were happy to have had great luck in timing with the weather and were glad to be in the Cabin on this night.
The area definitely needed the rain with all the Fires they've been having.

I would gladly accept a few Stings to have Karma shine on us like it has been this trip!

After Movies we settled into our Beds. I slept awesome! The bed upstairs was super comfortable!

Here's the "Relive" video of the route today.
