I like the 2017 better as well. The color, and the fender/ect painted rather than matte black paint scheme to me is more attractive. I guess they change things every year and I'm sure happy they continue the best motorcycle ever another year in any case.

How did they cheapen it?

It looks plasticy to me. The color matched fender and upper fairing of other years gives a more polished look.

In my opinion, and apparently Bryce's as well, the plastic makes it look "cheaper". "I" too prefer the painted look. That being said, for those that use the Tenere to it fullest capabilities, the plastic will not show scratches like paint. Plastic would be more conducive to riding through brush/branches. And in direct contradiction, I prefer bare plastic fenders on Jeeps instead of the easily scratched painted ones.

Color matched fender had already been done away with in previous years, so that's not new. The non-ES '17 in the sand color scheme has the plain black fender (though the blue color schemes are matched, I believe on both ES and non). I believe all color schemes in '15 had a non-matched fender as well - the '15 non-ES red for sure, given that I have one, but I don't think the silver/blue or the red ES had color-matched fenders either.

Correct. My ‘15 red ES, has a flat painted front fender. I’ve thought it might look good painted the same candy red as the tank and upper fairings. I think the flat finish is still painted though?

And the new FJR is completely painted matte. So I won't use the word "cheaper". Less expensive to manufacture due to less materials needed. On the positive side....less time/money waxing shiny paint. It was always my understanding that the ES had painted fenders, and non-ES had bare plastic. I didn't realize that the paint was a matte finish. Glad I got my '17 when I did. ::001::

the 2014 standard non-es had painted fenders. it doesn't seem that there's much rhyme or reason to Yamaha painting fenders.

If you want to see what colors were available each year you can check the model history link on Yamaha's website.

https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/motorsports/model-history

Up until this year the second generation was available in two colors. For some reason Yamaha only gave us one color in the ES but the choice of two in the non-ES. It never made sense to me why the folks spending more money had less choice. They seem to alternate painting the front fender, but this appears to be the first Model to have the plastic faring sides unpainted. I agree it definitely makes it look cheaper.

It would make some sense if that one color for the ES was "exclusive" to the ES. But what didn't make sense to me was that the 60th Anniversary yellow was not available on the ES....in the US. Elsewhere in the world it was.

Are you talking about COBALT blue? I mean, everybody has their preferences, but damn, the Cobalt is gorgeous. (especially in the sun) At least to me.

Me too but there's not much of it with all the black plastic on the 18.

I'm sure that the tank on my blue UK 2017 (colour is the same as the one on the US 2018 Yamaha website link) is exactly the same colour as my 2014 blue was, but with different tank transfers. Except that you now don't get a painted front mudguard or side panels, or even any stickers on the plastic muffler shield! But you do get two wonderful amber reflectors for the front forks.

Anyone notice the Warn winch listed under the Super Tenere available accessories? I hope I never get into a situation where I have to pull that out! :D

I saw that. First thought was: stock battery isn't gonna last very long. ::025:: And speaking of colors, where did the matte blue on the '18 FJR come from? To ME, matte would have made more sense for the Tenere. (less shiny parts on a "dirt" bike)

I don't think the black is to cheapen it, just a little different twist. I like it ok, but like the color of the 2017 better.
