Hey folks I am looking for settings for my ES for on road then off road. I am not looking for how to set sag that is well documented but general rule appears to be max out preload as the bike is very soft stock.

As for the settings soft standard and hard +/- where should I be for on road then off road. There seems to be zero explanation online about what each of these soft standard and hard settings do. I am assuming compression and rebound are coupled and cannot be adjusted separately unless that is what the +/- settings do. I am also assuming you cannot adjust compression and rebound independently front to rear.

If anyone has a thread or simple explanation, please let me know my forum search did not turn anything up?

Dude how do they know how much you weigh what you will put on the bike and where you will ride. It's all personal. If you put your riding weight up you may get some advice from other ES owners similar to you. For the record you can only adjust the damping settings which are not separate. Once you are happy with the preload for yourself just play around with the damping settings while riding. You will find your own way.

Used to tinker w/settings more than I do now as over time I realized very few adjustments were needed get me to where I prefer to be given varied surfaces.

Generally I'm the only one on the bike and I seldom ride w/o panniers for preparedness sake, so for general road riding and touring I select one helmet, luggage, and a hardness of +1 or 2. At 5'9, 190# it really sticks to the floor and handles beautifully. Not really riding much drastic dirt anymore so when I adjust for trail riding I lower the hardness and that largely does the trick. When on a very long trail or poor secondary roads with obviously repeating surface detail I'll dial it in further with hard/soft adjustments until it feels just right.

Had a non-ES and other than my original setup I never really played with it more than a couple times and I was happy as a clam with that too.

You missed my question entirely I already stated I did not need any advice on preload and sag. There are definitely recommended dampening settings for on road vs off road which is what my question was. My weight is irrelevant as dampening has nothing to do with weight. If anyone has any dampening settings that are ideal for on road vs off road please share. They are not preference there are recommended safe settings for both and they are different but the ES obfuscates what the settings do by the setting values.

Your wrong Sir. When you change the preload the damping settings move with it so once you have your preload preference you can play with the damping. And to my knowledge there are no reccomended settings as they are personal. I hope i have cleared it up somewhat.

What you are suggesting is not backed up by any Yamaha literature not saying you're wrong but it can't be confirmed. As for on road vs off road dampening settings there are general rules for what should be usimg in either setting not completely preference.

What I said regards preload settings and how it escalates the damping settings is in the manual.

If you put up your weight in riding gear people will be able to assist you with more detailed help.

I generally set mine at rider with luggage-Hard +3. Depends on how fast I’m riding. Just enough to keep the front fender from bottoming out. I weigh 180+ gear.

Im 95kg ready to roll and the ES preload settings are perfect for me and is agreed by people around a similar spec. I believe the luggage setting is about 25kg but I stand to be corrected there. So if you weigh 120kg you are going to be toying with 1 helmet plus luggage.

If im hard riding in a spirited fashion hard
plus 3 tightens it right up but the medium setting is quite a good setting for general road riding and soaking up shit. Up and down left and rights which come quick will have it moving around but it does amaze me how much difference it makes jumping up to hardest setting. And then when it starts jumping around again you check the Speedo !

Oddly enough, at 100lb+ more than you, I use the same settings. And, have never bottomed anything out. Gotta assume it's a road surface thing.

That's about my same assumptions. Max capacity for the bike is 450lb/204.5kg. Only seems reasonable that each helmet is equal to 200lb/91kg, and luggage is 50lb/23kg. Ish. I guess you could use max preload . . . . but, you better have some smooth ass roads.
