Above 55mph, the bike seems to be running just fine, but below that speed, every once in awhile it is surging for a second and the eco light goes out. I saw another post that they had a fouled plug so I already ordered new plugs and filter so plan on taking it apart this weekend. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you checked for codes - available through the dash on a 2016?

You don't mention mileage or service history, so I am wondering whether this is a recent thing, or has it crept up on you gradually. Knowing the bike's spec & what work was done at last service & when often gives us a steer. Has the bike been flashed, crashed or is it running any after-market pipes? Has the bike been jet washed or ridden in foul weather recently?

Could be a whole host of things TBH, from coil sticks/plugs to fuelling, bad/stale gas, TB balance, air leaks, or one of the many sensors.

Tell us more.

Eco light? Don't know about anybody else's ride, but an eco light?

There’s a little ECO icon, not a light actually, on the Gen 2 LCD dash. Near as I can tell it goes on and off constantly, somewhat randomly. It’s pretty useless and I ignore it. To the OP, I doubt it’s turning on and off has anything to do with your problem. I’m wondering if you have water intrusion into the plug wells?

Thanks for the replies. My bike has 8400 miles. I did the 4000 and 8000 services, the previous owner basically broke it in and did the 600 miles service then sold it. No after market engine parts. I ride it pretty much year round so it has been rained on. I've owned it 3 years and its not the typical twitchy throttle, i've gotten used to that. It just started doing this a few days ago. If i'm doing 40, trying to keep the throttle steady, it surges. I've tried using cruise control thinking it was me at first and it still does it. It only surges for a second, then will be fine for a few miles, then randomly surge again. I have plugs and a filter coming so I'm going to take it apart this weekend and hope it's just that. I'll check the coils while I'm in there too. I typically don't look at the eco icon either, I just noticed it shut off when it happened so trying to give as much info as possible. Is it pretty obvious when you have a bad coil? Thanks for your help.

Sounds very much like water intrusion past the coil sticks - hopefully salvageable, but treat them gently, they don't come cheap.

So I just got done replacing the plugs and checking the coils. The old plugs looked fine and the coils were within the range. I put a new filter in also. I took it for a test ride to see if it was fixed and now it seems to be surging more. Before it wasn't very noticeable in second gear doing 20mph, but now it is very noticeable. I couldn't even take it out of town to see at higher speeds cause I didn't want to get stuck. The econ icon seemed to stay off if that means anything, it usually settles down when I stayed at a constant speed and remains on. It still kicked on every once in awhile. It seems to idle just fine. If anyone has any other ideas, otherwise looks like I'll see when the dealer can get me in. Still no codes showing either when I hit the kill switch.

How do all the vacuum connections look around the throttle bodies? Two rubber caps like to rot after a few years, and a vac line to the MAP sensor on the left side can become disconnected.

Thinking about it... there may not be one on the left, just the hose.

Thanks, I thought I looked and they were fine, but I didn't look very well at them. I will take it apart again, not sure if I can today, but I will check all the hoses for cracks. Maybe after messing around with it, thats why it's worse now.

Update: I took it apart and checked the hoses, they all look good. I pulled the little cap off and that looks good too. I put it all back together and took it for a ride, and it is no longer surging all the time as it did after I changed the plugs and filter, but it is still surging every once in awhile in the 2000-3000 rpm range. Could it be bad gas? Is there something that I could add to the tank to try? I would think if it was bad gas though it wouldn't idle like normal. My local yamaha dealer isn't open till tuesday, so if nothing changes, I'll be talking to them. Thanks again.

That's how my FJ was if I didn't ride it for awhile, and the carbs started to gum up. The more I rode it, the less it would act up. But, that was carbed, and FI bikes generally don't have that issue. If it's a gas thing, there are additives to get moisture out. Or, just ride 'till you're close to empty, and put a tank full of nice fresh super from a reputable dealer in, and see.
