2014 Cruise Control issue

Hello everyone. I have a Tenere XT1200ZES and the cruise control never work since I picked it up with 25,000km on it. After searching this forum and performing the RECALL for the switch, I purchased the service manual. The service manual shows how to enter the diagnostic mode where you can check all the switches using the display. Under the diagnostic code 81 for the "SET" switch, I get no response when pressing the switch.

Has anybody replaced just the micro switch? If so, where can I find one? I really don't want to pay full cost for the left handlebar switch cluster. Anyone have a left switch laying around?

Thanks,
David

Hi David, not sure what you mean by “performing the recall”? The recall is an official factory recall from Yamaha and you should receive a letter for you contacting your local Yamaha dealer. Your dealer will then take your details and the VIN number of your bike, order the part for you, (probably only the front brake switch but I have heard some dealers are changing both front and rear brake switches), and arrange a date for you to attend to have it fitted for you all free of charge.

I think you'll find the OP is OK Rob; he is/was on the GL1800 forum - if that is our guy, David hails from Bethlehem PA.

AFAIK, the only option is a complete left side cluster, which doesn't come cheap - over £300 UK. Assuming the switch action is normal, have you checked the wiring &/or tried contact cleaner in the switch?

A couple of years back I switch the cruise on but it wouldn't set.

The bike had been stored over the winter and I then remembered I'd altered the rear brake pedal height and there was the problem

I know it's a long shot but just make sure your rear brake switch isn't cancelling the cruise control

Hope this helps

You're correct. I am on the GL1800 forum and from Pennsylvania however living in Turkey right now. I mostly hid in the background and don't usually post. I have a 2014 wing and picked up a wrecked Terere a few months ago. It had front end damage and I replaced everything on the front end to include the triple tree, forks, wheel and all the plastic in front of the handle bars. Bikes are expensive in Turkey.
Bike runs great but want the cruise to work. Yamaha replaced the front brake switch under Recall. When I got the bike back, I was disappointed it didn't fix the cruise issue. I tested all switches with a multimeter and with the onboard diagnostics. It's the "SET" Switch that's faulty. Costs $232 from the States. These are my bikes. Dave20201229_140405.jpg

You do realize there is a separate switch to turn on the cruise control ? I believe it’s the bottom right switch on the switch cluster, looks sort of like a speedometer or clock. Every time you shut the Tenere off you need to turn the cruise control back on, there is a little yellow light on the dash that lights up when cruise is turned on, after it’s turned on the set button should work.

Yes Cycledude. I know how to activate the cruise. The self diagnostic code 81 show the SET SWITCH is not working.

How do you test the switches like clutch micro switch

There are no exposed wires to put tester on
