Im in my 30s im 6ft 4 250lbs. Ive been on bikes most of my life. I bought a fz8 when i was in my early 20s and i absolutely loved that bike, I walked into the dealer wanting a dr650se and got that instead. Ive always wanted a dual sport. I realized that i wanted the more on road instead of the offroad so that led me to the GS, Tenere, Africa twin etc.

So the 2 up question, I had bought the fz8 while i was single and within a year or two i met the person who is now my wife. I took her out and bought her all the gear. We went out a few times around town short rides etc. Its a naked sport bike with a "seat". Fast forward a few year my dad had picked up a boulevard. My friends had traded their vstrom and r1 off for big boy harleys. We get roped in a short ride that ended up being like 350 miles and i remember debating on renting a uhaul to haul the bike home. it wasnt broke but i was. A few weeks after that my folks went out of town and my dad encouraged me to take his bike out. I did and my wife told me she would not ride on my bike again. Fair.

Few years went by. The bike i had made fast for short tracks like MSRH and Texas world (rip) and was somewhat good for cota. Was no longer fun to ride on the street. Here we are i had owned the bike a decade and sold it in december.

GS bikes have a placard value that im not willing to pay. I like them but i like my yamahas.

I really wanted the africa twin after testing one at moto gp a few years ago. Test riding one now i dont think its built for my frame.

I found a Tenere near me, which is hard. Its got enough farkles to represent the cost required to rehome it with the mileage on it.

so the question.

I cant find alot of info on this. Im a big guy, my wife is 6ft. What is like two upping as a tall person, or two tall people on this bike? Im chunky and im not asking my wife that question

I need it to be comfortable for the few occasional rides shes going to take a year with me. It has grab handles that my 8 didnt have. It has a seat that is a goodd 4 inches thicker for the passenger than my 8 was.

So what is it like for you all?

I like photos so you get a photo of my 8

Hello and welcome.

I have a Gen1 bike, which is the version you’re likely looking at. IMO the standard rear suspension is not up to, two up, with luggage. In every other way the bike is well capable of touring, I’m 6’2 and about 230lb.
A Gen2 bike is likely more suitable in standard trim.

welcome,

i have a gen 1 now had it 9 yrs i,m 6foot 2 tall and 17stone, my wife is 5 foot 11 tall have done alot and alot of 2 up holidays over the time,

i don,t think the rear cshock on a gen 1 or gen 2 is capable of those sizes plus luggage anyway, my gen 1 has had a ohlins rear shock fitted with a 170 spring and copes with any single riding 2 up riding and luggage comfortably now.

also i moved my givi trekker top box back 2 inches, and fitted lower foot pegs and my wife can travel all day, day in day out now love this bike

also didn,t want a africa twin with chain drive, and then tubed rims

I'm 6' and 230lbs, wife is 5.8 and only double a couple time won't doit again unless in a bind. She rides her own.
But I'm a little bias on the subject cause I do not like doubling in the first place.
I agree the rear spring is not good enough for it long term and an upgrade will be needed.
For doubling I think there are much better options out there then the S10, it would not be my choice, too many modifications are needed to make it good and it still not great. One its too tall and top-heavy IMO for it, you definitely don't want to drop that at an intersection with the wife. JMO

I'm 6'3" 260# and just got a Gen2 bike but have ridden bikes well over 300,000 miles on the road. I test rode this 2017 and the seat was in the low position so I could raise it an inch but it still felt good. Had power, sips gas if you ride it in tour mode like you're touring. With the winglets I had good protection for basically a naked bike.
Do you want to go long distance as in those 350 to 500 mile days more often? This is a tall bike and with some custom things for comfort I believe it will do all you want. As you and I know most things are made for people less than our height so we either have to deal with it or customize. Every bike I own gets a custom seat... and within the last 6 years custom suspension. Best bang for your buck. Adds comfort and safety, plus better tire wear!
If you guys want to venture out long distance then a Goldwing is worth a look see. Maybe a Honda ST1300 or a BMW K1600. But in the adventure group it comes down to the two bikes you mentioned. I've learned chains are a non issue with a good quality chain and a reliable chain oiler (I prefer the Cameleon Plus) as I have over 30,000 on my chain and sprockets right now on my CBR 1100XX and I clean the chain every 4,000 miles or so. Shaft IS wonderful though from a maintenance view when doing your own tires.
Put a custom seat on it and custom suspension and this bike will haul both of you comfortably for many a mile. You'll probably want some riser/setbacks too.
Will it be a speed demon... No.
For massive torque that will move with both of you on the bike then you can't beat a 6 cylinder wing. If your wife liked the Boulevard for comfort and you're after that then test ride one... but be careful. My wife only rides the wing now!
If you get it for the right price you can always sell it if it doesn't quite work for you.
Good luck.

the long trips are not going to be prevalent. Most are going to be 150 or so miles stretched over 5-6 hours. We ride in the ozarks living in the foot hills so it’s ride to this spot explore and back etc.

Our animals are elderly and their medical needs are too intricate to ask a friend to do while we are gone overnight so trips where we would be carrying a lot of luggage are out for a handful of years.

it is a gen 1, it already has custom seats and a passenger back rest. I’m not imposed to a different shock or a spring rate change if need be.

we talked about the wing. I like them but it’s not for me right now. I’m likely to endup with one eventually but not right now.

I know the tenere was never gonna be my wife and I hop on and travel across the country kind of bike. 90% of the time it’s just gonna be me.

appreciate the insights, I plan on test riding said bike on Saturday but I’ll value any opinion

Thanks

Hi A_G

The S10 makes a good two up bike; however, it does need some modifications to make it great.

on my 2012 I did the following changes, upgraded rear suspension, top case, airhawk pad, and some Motorcycle Larry passenger peg lowering kit which lowered it for 1.25”. Be careful what panniers are on the bike as well. My wife said my Holans would dig into the back of her knees causing issues. Panniers that sit a but further back might be helpful.

My wife is 5’10 and I am 6’ and these modifications really helped out a lot. I will say this, we sold the S10 for a 2016 GSA and my wife raved how comfortable it was off of the dealer floor. Is it a better bike? In my opinion no. I loved both. If you can make the necessary changes to the S10 it is an absolutely phenomenal bike.

Be aware that the custom seat is good for that person it is made for... meaning, if you are 6'4" and that person is not it's not going to do a lot for you. Now some makers of custom seats will give you a large break in price to remake it for you since you have an original one. Russell Day Long saddles is a premier seat maker.
If no top box make sure she has a back rest for comfort and safety too. You live in a wonderful place to ride and explore!

Test drove the bike today. Im sold. I feel like although its not touring seat for the my wife it will do the part just fine for our purposes. it was 45*F outside and having wind protection was really pleasant. I have to go out of town for work and should be bringing it home next saturday.

The Jesse Bags panniers on my 2013 can adjust fore and aft about 5," so you can slide them back when going 2up to give more room for your pillion passenger. I don't know if others offer that same amount of adjustment, if any.

So you are actually tall. I understand your pain. I think your wife is very supportive I agree with your point of view that about the rear spring, it's not good to check this Tenere. BTW I like your motorcycle.

I'm 6 ft and the lady is 5'10". We find long day rides to be no problem.

As for any other questions, the bike's been around since 2011 in the US so most any answer can be found with the search box. In short, it's comfy for long distance and as reliable as a rock. Think Chevy Tahoe.

I'm not smart enough to get the @*%$ search box to work. But if I use Google, it'll show this forum's thread on the search topic.

I dont have a garage. And this wasnt a point that would have determined if i bought the bike or not. But it doesnt fit through the door of my very large shed/small barn workshop thing. So im building a new door tomorrow. :D
Old bike did

rode it about 100 miles today. Mixed off road and road. 48 degrees too.
Took it to bath tub rocks. I’d taken my Fz8 there before but I did the same water crossing this time
