Clutch or transmission seem excessively noisy at idle with clutch engaged. Quiet when disengaged.
Is this inherent to these bikes?
I didn’t notice it being that loud for the first thousand miles.

Yup, these bikes are just mechanically noisy. Completely normal. If you've recently added a skid plate, that can make them sound louder still by reflecting noise upward at you.

My skid plate came with a rubber or foam pad glued between the plate and the engine, I just assumed that maybe that’s supposed to help reduce noise.

Hi,
Where do you get Dynamat and does it create much of a mess with oil changes?

thanks

ken
I got the stuff on eBay, if you google “Dynamat” you’ll find other sources I’m
sure. There’s no mess, just peel and stick to the inside of the plate. I remove my plate for oil changes too.

On my WR250R I noticed more engine noise after installing an aftermarket aluminum skid plate and with a resonance at a certain rpm I would often pass through when accelerating. I got some cheap sound deadening material from AutoZone and cut pieces to fit around portions of the skid plate. Helped some with the sound reflection. Moved the resonance to much higher in the rpm band, so I encounter it much less. I don't know if official Dynamat would do better.

I need to add some to my Altrider S10 skidplate as it does amplify or reflect some of the engine rattle. Not as annoying as the wr250r was. But I can confirm the general concept works and that material cheaper than Dynamat also works.

Transmission noise is an inevitability on the S10. A big lumpy 270 twin, with a straight cut gear train, that shows itself by quietening right down with the clutch pulled in. Just ignore it, unless accompanied by excessive gear/bearing whine out on the road.

Some manufacturers use helical gears for a quiet trans, but they create torque induced sideways forces that can cause a whole host of other issues that need managing - witness BMW currently with a recall on the K1600 6th gear & 5/6 selector forks, where wear on the shift forks can lead to the trans trying to select 2 gears at once, creating a lock-up.
