14' basket, Barnett spring conversion issues

Gen 1 with 5k miles. Purchased the 14' clutch basket and the Barnett spring conversion. After installing with the stock plates, I tested the clutch engagement with the bike running. I could overpower the clutch and stop the bike in gear with my feet on the ground. I disassembled the entire clutch for inspection to insure nothing was missing. With the clutch boss bottomed out on the Barnett pressure plate I could slightly move the first clutch disc (loose). All the discs and steel plates are installed, none are missing. So my question is. Is it possible the Barnett plate was machined incorrectly to allow more Gap thus causing the clutch to slip? Or is something else going on? I'll install the stock spring setup tomorrow and see if the bike functions properly with that.

When you removed the '12 clutch basket, did you pry out the small clip spring and remove the two additional clutch disks from the basket, then install them in the '14 basket with the retaining clip spring before installing all the rest of the clutch plates?

Did you keep the order sequence of the disks and alignment the same when doing the job? The disks look like they go in any way, but you can put them in one notch off and cause a problem.

The set came with 3 spring sets. I used the black ones which are medium compression. I did not remove the inner plates from the clutch boss behind the retaining wire, just removed the outer plates so I could get the locking wrench on the boss for removal of the shaft nut then reinstalled the plates since the boss is reused, and the basket is a separate part. I guess it's possible some of the clutch plates are not indexed properly, is there a link to proper disc assembly and indexing.

You are correct about the clutch boss. I have in the past replaced both the clutch boss and the basket on my '12 and forgot that the two captured plates were captured on the boss, not in the basket.

I'm not sure if there is any documentation of the plate orientation on the forum. It's covered in the FSM. I put a reference dot on my outer most plate and the basket has a reference marking as I recall. IIRC, it was only the last plate or two that impacted anything, but I could be wrong.

I have the last plate offset, one notch between the rest of them. One thing the manual stated was that it might take a afew gear shifts for the plates to seat correctly. Never had that happen, but could be a possibility. Even though there talking about disengagement, not the engagement issue I'm having.

The friction plates have a v notch on one ear on each plate, what does that indicate? There is also an arrow symbol on the 14' basket. The service manual does not reference these marks, but I assume they are there for alignment.

Location? Minnesota given your screen name?

I put a 14 basket in mine a few years back. I am in the north metro and bored to tears if you need another set of eyeballs. Be glad to grab my manual and come have a lookee see.

I'm in NW MN. I just put the stock pressure plate in and the bike operated normally. So it's an issue with the Barnett kit #511-90-10009.

I called Barnett, they said they put the part number on all there pressure plates. Mine does not have the part number on it. I purchased it online and they said it's more than likely a copy of there kit. Hard to believe, but I'm going to order another directly from them and it better work.

Thanks for sharing the experience. Sucks. I look forward to reading that the replacement works perfectly and you got your money back from the online seller of the first kit.

Where online did you get it?

A seller on eBay, almost 10k feedback at 99%. I sent them an email asking if they are an authorized dealer, they look legit so I don't know what happened, just repeating what the tech guy at Barnett told me. Ordered a new one from Barnett today, when I get that I'll put a micrometer on the plate dimensions and see if there's any difference. I did the Graves mcct at the same time and the bike sounds pretty smooth at startup and idle.

What's the point of the Barnett? When I updated the clutch basket on my Gen 1 to the Gen II, my dealer also replaced my worn clutch plates using OEM parts. The bike shifted beautifully.

The idea of the Barnett spring conversion kit is it replaces the stock diaphragm spring and pressure plate with 6 coil springs for a more linear clutch pull. My other bikes have coil springs stock, rather than a diaphragm and I feel the diaphragm gives a, on or off clutch engagement/feel. It also comes with 3 sets of different springs at different rates so you can fine tune the pull and engagement. Or install every other spring with 2 different rates to fine tune clutch feel.
