    Short Key for OEM Panniers.

I had to make mine from cut down normal length keys. I epoxied them into some radio knobs I got at an electronics store. I’m not aware of any shorty keys or blanks that you can buy.

    Lower steering bearing removal

Cut the cage off and discard the rollers. I used a chisel at the base of the bare inner race. It took a while to start moving, but once I got a small gap there it went quickly working around the race.

Anyone watch a show called Himalaya Calling?

I enjoyed it. The super teneres were impressively reliable. I think there was only a punctured oil filter and a flat tire they had to deal with.

    Tracer 9 GT+ test ride

When comparing chain to shaft efficiency, it’s important to realize that chain losses are for new perfectly adjusted and lubricated chain and sprockets. The efficiency will decline with mileage, wear, corrosion and cleanliness. A shaft on the other hand does not face this degradation issue...

Does our bike have valve seats?

As noted above, there have to be hardened valve seats in order to tolerate unleaded fuel. Even steel heads need hardened seats. The seats don’t appear to be available separately, rather they are integral with the cylinder head. A good machine shop should be able to clean up the seats (depending...

    Disappointing result LED (H7) upgrade

I tried a few different LED headlights and in spite of looking blindingly bright, just didn't put much light on the road. No amount of fiddling with the rotation of the bulb or aim was satisfying. I finally ended up installing a HID system, which to my eyes works a lot better than LEDs in the...

    BMW GS 1300

The faithful will bitch about it and buy it anyway as they seem afflicted by some strange form of Stockholm Syndrome. After hanging around with the local BMW club a bit, I would not characterize them as happy owners, but buying anything else seems unfathomable to many of the members I’ve met.

OEM side cover instal on XT 1200 Z

The non-ES model’s frames lack the mounting points for that cover. You will have to invent your own way to mount it if your bike is a non-ES. The aftermarket solution would be easier.

    OEM Side paniers - Akrapovic?

Maybe reposition the hanger behind the frame lug (i.e. more inward) if it is currently positioned on the outside?

    Unpleasant Surprise

There’s no PCV valve in that vent. It’s just a tube.

    Improving brake performance

I've never noticed that issue, and I do a lot of trail braking in the twisty bits. I find their response quite linear compared to the OEM pads which feel somewhat "wooden" to me.

Lowering the fork legs in the triple clamp; how deep can I go?

If you are having to "fight" the balance of the bike in turns, I would suggest there's something wrong with the bike. Steering head bearing torque incorrect? tire pressure incorrect? tire type or size incorrect? Defective tire? Personally, coming off of sport and sport touring bikes, I prefer a...

    Improving brake performance

I found the EBC HH pads give better initial bite and a more linear response to lever pressure than the OEM pads. Some say they’ll wear the rotor faster but the OEM front pads are also HH.

Lowering the fork legs in the triple clamp; how deep can I go?

no, you were not clear. If the forks are in the standard position as delivered by Yamaha, there is no space to extend them. The tops of the outer tubes are already flush to the top of the upper triple clamp. The Super Ténéré already has more rake than most standard, sport and sport touring...

Lowering the fork legs in the triple clamp; how deep can I go?

Adding rear preload would accomplish the same, unless you think the bike will get too high for you going that way.

    Steering head bearing replacement

I’d stick with OEM bearings. I ordered the All Balls ones at first but noticed they were made in China. I’ve had poor durability from Chinese bearings before so sent them back and ordered the OEM ones.

    Engine warning light

A wheel sensor error, caused by spinning the wheels separately will cause an ABS error, not an engine fault (different warning lights). An ABS error as described would clear once the key is turned of and the bike is ridden again.
