Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

Thank you gentlemen for all the points and the discussion. I learnt a lot re. battery, CCA, starter idiosyncrasies of the S10 :). I realized that the Ah is a critical metric to compare batteries for this bike. I just pulled these for quick comparision Yuasa YTZ12S (LeadAcid) = 11Ah, 210 CCA...

    Power Distribution Module

Looked ThunderBox up and saw the features etc. Seems like a quality product and well thought out. TB-U02 has moved to #1 on my list now:)

    Power Distribution Module

So far this is the list I have to choose from for Costs vs. Benefits. In ascending order of $$s: Street FX PDM ~$20 (manual switch) INNOVV Power Hub 2 or 3 (auto 10 sec delay, Max 15A) Eastern Beaver PC8 ThunderBox TB-U02 Rowe PDM60 Rowe AmpLink PDM Neutrino Black Box - Element+ Neutrino Black...

    Power Distribution Module

Good observation. It is 15A max i.e. 3A x 5 circuits. Max any one circuit can take is 5A. So one can do 3 circuits of 5A x 3 = 15A. Yes 5A is a severe limitation for sure. Thanks, everyone for your insights. I guess you get what you pay for.

    Power Distribution Module

What do you think of INNOV Power Hub 3 https://www.innovv.com/innovv-powerhub3 ? Cheaper than PDM60, has 10sec delay and no complexities of USB programming, etc. Do you see any downsides? Will be doing my 1st electrical mods, so want to start off right rather than connect directly to the battery.

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

UPDATE: Got the wiring harness upgraded (recalled item)! The dealer did it for free. Just rode the bike back home. The bike started on 1st press within 5 seconds even when it was a cold a 4 deg C here. Not 100% sure, but it could have been one of the issues for my starting trouble. Only time...

Antigravity Lithium Battery - Install and Initial Impressions

So only advantage of the Anti-Gravity over other lithium batteries is the "Reserve power" right? A cheaper costco 3-in-1 lithium jumpstarter (jump + USB power bank + flashlight) would also act the same as a reserve button IMO. TYPE S Portable Jump Starter & Power Bank with Emergency Multimode...

Can I do the valve job on Super Tenere?

Thanks. Will do my CCT vs MCCT research. MCCT - https://www.gravesport.com/products/graves-motorsports-yamaha-r1-fz10-mt10-high-precision-cam-chain-tensioner.html CCT - 2BS-12210-01-00 https://www.ebay.com/itm/333117452872 Found this thread too...

Can I do the valve job on Super Tenere?

Thank you for your helpful tips. I just brought the S10 used it is a 2012 Gen 1 with 80k miles. I am the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner sold it within 3 months of buying (he did not like it for rough trails and went with Africa twin). So I have no way of knowing what kind of service was done on it...

Can I do the valve job on Super Tenere?

I have done some mech. work on my other bikes, but never a valve job. I checked with the local Yamaha dealer. Their hourly rates are CAD $135/hr and they said 5 hrs for only a valve job. For a tune-up package that includes oil/valves/plugs it will be $1100 + parts + taxes. I am thinking I...

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

So a NOCO NLP14 (lithium) with 500 CCA would be even better right? If I get a new one, I will get a lithium battery.

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

Thank you so much @lund . This is the best explanation of what is really going on in the start-up process for S10. Coming from a carburetted motorcycle, this is very valuable info for me, to understand the differences and the idiosyncracies of this bike. @lund, hmm... how does one know that the...

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

@Fordf350 may be possible. Over the winter I plan to do a thorough tune-up and overhaul, so whatever it is may be resolved. @whisperquiet good to know. Will keep that in mind. Thanks. @Cycledude I bought a Costco lithium jump start kit too. Itis surprisingly compact and light. @Squibb Will...

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

Is it possible to diagnose any timing/valve issues from the sound of the engine? Any experts here? Thanks in advance. https://photos.app.goo.gl/kDr53ucUNoLrT7e5A I also noticed some weird sounds and hesitations at ~3,000 RPM. Hope they go away.

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

Update: Yippee I got it started! Now I feel better and I can continue with my upgrades, mods etc. :D What did I do? The same things as before - topped up battery, did steps as #8, but still no luck. was disappointed but then I still decided to give it some love and care. I replaced the fused...

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

My Yamaha dealer got back and said that only one recall is pending i.e. the (Wire Harness). I scheduled a appointment with then on Dec 9th so they can fix it. I will have to tow the bike to them. Hopefully that may fix my "no start" situation. Thank you to all you members suggested remedies

Frustrated that used bike I bought is not starting now!

Oh wow, that is a big job. I don't think any updates have been done to this bike. I recently bought this bike used and it seems like even the recalls have not been rectified. I will try the easier things 1st before I mess with the cam chains and valves. I suspect it is something simple, I...
