Sorry to labour this point, but exactly how long is the OEM filter? I had bought a K&N 204 filter that has a hex on the top to aid removal with socket set, and that one wouldn't allow the Givi bash plate to fit. Here's a pic I managed to get through the bash plate holes, plus one of the two 204...

I should add to post #13, that the 4200 miles I did were across France, all the way around Spain and back again. All with recovery/repatriation insurance and of course, not a great distance from UK. So for that the Sportster WAS suitable, though some would disagree.

Thanks Sierra, all I remember is that when I tried (a) filter the bash plate didn't go on, it kept pivoting on the filter. Now it's perfectly possible that I wasn't using an OEM filter and that's where the problem lay. Appreciate the note-I'll look into it.

well, my garage is so dark, it looked like the main lights were on when the parking lights had come on, and as you all correctly said the mainms only come on when it fires.

Thanks guys, I'll check. As I'm not normally in front of the bike when I start it, it's difficult to tell, but certainly looks like the lights are on when I've started it before, could be my mistake though, or alternatively, there's something wrong with my bike alone.
