I know it's a bit late on the reply, but no you do not have to remove the ring gear to change the pinion bearings. I only did it because once I got in there, why not. I had looked up the parts and they were fairly cheap.

Here is the one I made a few years back.

Does the pinion gear have play in it? I posted a video of mine with an indicator showing the movement. If it does move, search for the post I made on here rebuilding the entire final drive.
