My wife and I are just back from a very enjoyable 3 weeks in mainland Europe visiting France. Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and back to France In all that time we saw only one other XT. We arrived in Roscoff on Sunday and had approx 600 km to our first stop over. About 150 km from our hotel i pulled into a fuel station and filled up. Now I really mean filled up. I have a number of 1/8" holes inside my filler cap and this enables me to get some extra petrol. I only do this if I intend to fill and sash with no coffee. This time however I delayed probably 5 minutes. Getting back on the motorcycle again it started as normal and travelled approx 25 - 30 mtrs and died. It startwd immediately but again traveled no more than 10 mtr and again died. We dismounted and started to worry. I checked and the fuel pump would run when cycling the ignition. My second thoughts were that I had put the wrong fuel (Diesel) in the motorcycle. Checking my receipt proved that I had put petrol in. Opening the filler and sniffing confirmed this. I again started the motorcycle and again it started no problem but cut out after a short time when revved . I decided to remove the fuel and refill . I tried the shop but was unable to purchase a hose to syphon. Going back to the motorcycle I was about to call my breakdown service when I again started the motorcycle and let it tick over for maybe 3 minutes without revving. It seemed to run perfectly and when I eventually revved it answered thecall. I then decided to give it a go and gearing up again we headed off. Not a hint of a problem since and we did in excess of 7500km since. Since returning I have checked the fuel filter in the tank and the tank itself. Both are spotless. The plugs and coils have been checked and all fuses have been checked and proved to be clean and making good contact. My own thinking is that my delay in moving on caused pressure in the tank which forced petrol into the vent pipe and overflow which vapour locked the tank. Any thought would be welcomed. The motorcycle is 2021 Z. with 28k km.

Methinks you surmise correctly - fuel overfill, which has then expanded further with heat from the engine.

Ideally you need to stop filling when the fuel level reaches the inner filler tube, but it is sometimes tempting to top out the fuel to squeeze in a bit of extra range - usually not a problem if you move off promptly.

Check the two vent hoses from the tank. Make sure they are clear and free. Many times a little bug will get stuck and clog or they build a house and clog the hose. This will create a vacuum lock.
Try this first and report back.

I have my take like yours, and I ‘super fill’ often. I’ve not had this issue before, but I do check the hoses. If you fill up like this and go get coffee or food you normally will come back out with a large pool of fuel under your bike, unless the hoses are clogged.

Might be mud, stone, bugs

Have you ever managed to figure out how much extra fuel those extra holes you drilled let your tank hold ?

Approximately 1/2 gallon.... My buddy and I made comments about this 'extra fuel' last month on the BDR... I have the extra, he does not the extra. Lets just say, "I'm glad I had the extra"

(This extra volume has a lot to do with your patience at the pump. If you want a little extra or a lot extra)

I can manage almost 2 Lts with a couple of extra shakes ;)
@ Tabasco. I just checked both hoses by gently blowing through them and both are free. I did not want to lift the tank as if they had been pinched, by moving the tank I might have cleared the obstruction.

I’ve done that before. I have drilled an extra vent hole in mine too. In my case the bike didn’t stall but ran poorly, misfired and stumbled for a few seconds. It then clears and runs normally again. It only happens if I overfill and then leave the bike parked for a few minutes, especially if it’s warm out. If I ride off right away there’s never a problem
