If you are going to the Super Tenere rally this July and are coming in from the south or east, you might want to check this out.
I ran over to the Niobrara River in north Nebraska to explore for a day.
It is a very scenic part of Nebraska and well worth checking out.
I was looking at all the old bridges on G. Earth and I counted about 8 to 10. But when I got over there things don't always look the same in person. So I only found about half that.

On the way over Neligh there is a Mill and old bridge.

Then that night I found a remote free place to pitch my tent.

The next morning I headed for the western most bridge so I could work my way back home from there.
This bridge is south of Cody, the road was paved for a ways then way out in the boonies on sand and gravel.

Then east through the country to another bridge.

Remember, these bridges are in the Nebraska Sand Hills along a river, Know your sand riding abilities before you try this.

Then the next bridge is a little bit iffy.
It's located just south of Valentine off highway 97.
It's the last road to the east before crossing the Niobrara river.
There is no road sign or anything besides a mailbox. It truly looks like just a privet driveway and it just may be, so try this at your own risk.
As soon as you pull in you will cross a cattle guard and it puts you right into a cattle pasture.

I went through several cattle pastures and had to wait for cows to get out of my way sometimes, but in the end it was worth it and I never seen a person anywhere.

The next bridge was just in Valentine.

Then further east I west south down to a St. park that had an old bridge but I couldn't get close enough for a picture, Nebraska is not tourist friendly and requires some kind of a $30 pass to enter their parks. FORGET THEM.

So I went south on a new paved road out of Sparks, it ends at the river and there is a great campground right on the waters edge with what looked like new bath houses and a great place to camp.

I then rode the river road east for a couple hours. It turned out to be fantastic!, Never seen another person and very pretty!
But, remember this is the Nebraska Sand Hills along a river, Very sandy road sometimes.

Then I was back into Iowa to camp last night.

I hope some of you enjoyed this and will try to make it to some of these bridges before they are all gone. . . .

Steve
Are they removing them to reduce maintenance costs due to low usage, or safety issues?

That's a wonderful warning. I know my sand skills... You've seen me stuck in a hole on 11,000 feet. You can't even imagine what I could show you on a road like this. It's ain't pretty.

I actually expect to be approaching the event from the north west. So I think I'm safe from running across this particular humiliation.
