question , when will we know when a vaccine is being affective ? if your waiting on that your not leaving the house . they are already saying its changing . will be more reasons to keep you locked down . you can't trust the info they are giving you , its this today its that tomorrow . I am planning for this trip , something exciting to look forward to ...... when that week gets close we will know more about what the risk are and then be able to decide what level of risk to take . we ride motorcycles , pretty damn risky by itself , but we ride anyway . life is short ,and to be a prisoner of fear locked up in your home is no life . we ride because it adds to our lives and we understand something could happen to end our lives . but at least we are living , and free .
and just an observation about things around here . what they say is happening here ,case rates ,deaths etc . not matching what any one actually sees . not saying it's not happening and I know some who have had it and some who have it now and all ages , all mild cases . hope it stays that way .
every person who reads about this trip or rally or get together will have to decide what is in their best interest , they do each day what ever they are doing . I would like to see this topic remain positive about the gathering and not over organized and common sense about the health concerns . take a break from C-19 as we discuss how much fun and what's to see in South Dakota . let assume it's not an issue for a few months , might be healthy for the brain to park this virus where the sun don't shine , for awhile .

I took a look on google earth and the area looks very interesting ..... wild bill hickock is buried there .... compared to Texas (at least in central Texas ) the temperatures should be about perfect .
so some of y'all who have been there can fill in the blanks of those who have not been there... for those who will explore pavement only and for those who want more dirt , gives us a rundown .
I'm going to need new tires , but which tires?

1291 miles for me.
I've never been to the Black Hills before and I hope to attend.
I'm already planning to haul my CRF450L to Colorado in late Aug so we'll see how things work out.

I’ve been there it’s great riding and perfect weather....well, except for the random hail storm in the afternoon mixed with gusting winds. There’s a lot to see like the badlands, mt Rushmore, state park with Buffalo herds, and several I’m leaving out. The roads are curvy with lots of elevation changes. Great paved riding. I haven’t done much off pavement there but there is plenty of it. North side of Sturgis there is a cool jeep trail that runs down to deadwood. On south on dirt roads is the movie set for “dances with wolves” I’m super excited to go run the hills with a bunch do Super ten riders.

I'm not organizing anything.
These are just suggestions
If anyone would rather have it at Deals Gap ,Moab, Or. Marble Falls speak up. You won't be stepping on my toes.
I'm the most disorganized guy there is.
I could be packed and ready to make the trip and my granddaughter call me up and say "Papa can you come over?" and I'd be off in another direction
I would like to hear more options , It's still early..

I think the Black Hills is an excellent area for a get together, just so long it's not close to the Sturgis Rally. When I lived in Wyoming, we enjoyed riding that area several times. We definitely don't want to be there during the rally.

Moab starts getting hot ..... black hills , deadwood , pretty much the center of the country east to west . someone from Florida or Maine would have a long haul .
I'm the most disorganized guy there is.
my wife might argue that point .

The Black Hills area is a great location for a rally. I would suggest thinking about scheduling it for the middle of September. Cooler weather, Sturgis is over and most of the tourists are gone. You can drive right into Mount Rushmore without waiting in traffic. The lighting ceremony there is a must see. The buffalo roundup at Custer State Park is scheduled for Sept. 23-25. Also, there are 25 casinos in Deadwood just waiting to take your money. Hopefully the virus will be under control by then.

We rode over to the Black Hills this past year, Sept 12 - 18. The weather was nearly perfect while we were there, but they had snow the week before we arrived and snow again the week after we left.
No crowds, and we got some good deals on leftover t-shirts... :)

We may need to change the Title to" Camp and Ride" instead of a Rally.
No fees
No Banquet
No real organized routes
No leaders
No door prizes
Just show up if you want and RIDE!

We could put up a Pole with suggested dates and the most popular is the date.

That is unless someone steps up and takes charge, Feel free Mark. I'm just getting to old and forgetful, I could just show up on the wrong week or something.

I never thought about the possibility of snow. I have been there several times in recent years in September and early October and never ran into snow. I guess August would be a safer bet.

...but you're going to get us t-shirts....right? ;)

Actually, great thread, Steve. It had DM and me ride planning in the 16 degree temps yesterday. Much appreciated. We're thinking this will be a fantastic loop ride to/from the Black Hills, through Canada, to Niagara Falls. Just need the world to open up a little more.

For the east coasters who have not been there, South Dakota feels like you're in the West. The east has nothing like it an you'll feel like you've gone somewhere even though it's only in middle of the country. Truly fantastic riding in the Black Hills.

One word of caution...if you go to the Badlands (and you should), you could end up in the very touristy town of Wall, SD. Make sure to bring your own bug spray. We walked from the hotel to Wall Drug, and were relentlessly attacked by some kind of flying biting bug. I can usually ignore that kind of stuff, but these suckers inflict pain. Wall Drug is fully aware of these little bastards and will happily sell you a can of spray for $18. I've not encountered these bugs anywhere else in SD, so I suspect they may have been placed there to help sell spray in Wall.

Lol you arent missing a thing if you skip wall drug.

I hate that place with the burning passion of a thousand suns. They have ruined the landscape for hundreds of miles in every direction with those goddamn billboards.
