How To: Cycle the ABS Pump

Here's how to use the S10 built in ABS pump cycling feature.

Tools Needed:
1. Jumper wire with both ends stripped.
2. Mini Screw Driver to remove the waterproof rubber bungs.
3. Fully Charged Battery.



3. Locate the 4-way connector under the main seat.



4. Remove the 2 rubber bungs on Blue and Black wire. Then attach the jumper wire as shown. The wire diameter of the stripped ends needs to be of a certain size so that they are 'catch' inside the connectors.


5. Set the Kill Switch to OFF


6. Turn the KEY to ON. Observer that the ABS warning light on the dash is flickering ON and OFF. If this is not so, the jumper wire is not connected correctly.


7. PRESS and HOLD the START BUTTON for about 4 seconds.

8. Simultaneously Step down on the Rear Brake Pedal and Grab the Front Brake lever.

9. The ABS Pump will first actuate the Front for a few seconds, then the Rear, and then back to the Front. All done in about 15 seconds.

10. Key Off. Congrats. ABS Pump cycled.

11. Remove jumper wire. Replace the 2 bungs to the connector.

12. Enjoy the ride! Then have a beer.

Purpose:
1. After the brake fluid bleed, some fluids are trapped inside the ABS unit. This is the only way to move these guys out.
2. Preventive Maintenance. If the ABS pump is not used for a very long time, it may get stuck and ABS may not actuate when you need it.
3. Some worst case scenario where air gets introduced to the pump and the brake pedal feels like there is no resistance (not woody feeling). Cycle this to move air out from the ABS unit and you may need to do this more than 10X.

This is a good write up, and I copied it for my service manual, but it's not the only way to cycle the ABS pumps when you're bleeding the brakes. You can do a first bleed, then ride your bike down a gravel driveway and grab each brake til the ABS pump kicks on, then go back and bleed the brakes again. It's easier on a loose surface like gravel because you don't have to get going as fast in order to get the ABS to activate when you brake, but it works on the street, too.

Even though there is a sticky about bleeding the ABS brakes, I'll make this a sticky too, because it's clear and focuses on the pump.

So at which point of the bleed process does the pump need to be cycled?

Bleed first. Then cycle. Then bleed again. Done...unless u got air in the ABS pump itself which requires mulitple loops of bleed, cycling until all air is purged.

similar procedure for pre-2014 models (mine is 2012's), & which had swap to a later FJR Starter-Kill Switch cluster.

did what @2daMax mentioned, but I bleed, cycled then bleed again.

took the chance to flush my rear since it was last done in '15 IIRC..

the rear brake reservoir's diaphragm was slightly distorted but finger tweak back to shape.

after putting back everything, discover the front brake reservoir is slightly blowing bubbles when I squeeze the lever as I mist the area with water to wash off any residue.

reopen the cover, clean everything & out back. mist then squeeze lever again, bubbles still appearing.

wipe off excess water & try again.. so far so gd & brake tension is back..

Could be worth while going down to the local electronics store and get the right diameter banana terminals to solder onto some jumper wires to make a good connection and leave in the tool box.

An old thread I know but thanks so much for taking the time to write it... I just bled the back brake properly in a camp ground 1/4 of our way home from collecting the bike.

Brilliant post...I'm outta bed 5.30am sitting in Slovakia ,18th country European tour ...been plauged by rear brake problem, yam dealer Athens 2 days 3 independent bike shops throughout Europe and 3 number self bleeds ...still the problem occurs ,...ITS SUPERTEN it shouldn't happen ...thanks for post ..

Thanks everyone! I'm bleeding my brakes, clutch, and coolant change next week. I could not find out how to cycle the ABS in the service manual. This is a very helpful forum.

At the same connector with the jumper there is a way to see the fault code of ABS unit.
Can somebody please tell the procedure?
I have an issue with the light of ABS comes on and off sometimes and I saw that at the workshop yesterday, the guy did something with the buttons (odometer & function) and he saw the codes and then erased them.
So I need to check it again by myself, but the service manual that I have, says nothing about the procedure with the buttons......

I just performed this service yesterday and yes... kill switch needs to be in the “run” position to activate the ABS purge.

Thanks Craigd, I have a 2014 and let me check I have this correctly

1) Jumper the wires
2) Kill switch is in OFF position
3) Hold front and rear brakes
4) Turn key ON
5) ABS system will cycle...

Question: Did you ever put the kill switch in ON position?

If I follow your write up in my bike nothing happens...

Wet grass will cycle it. I do it all the time

Does doing this eliminate the need to cycle the ABS pump? I had my dealer change my brake fluid when they were replacing the pads and they probably didn't cycle the ABS pump if the service manual doesn't mention it.
