Engine Management Light on

This morning on the way to work the yellow engine management light of death came on whilst decelerating to turn at a junction.
(2010 model, 26,000miles, Engine Temp was at 71 degrees, oil is at the correct level, rider fully hydrated, sun was shining & bike up to then felt okay).
Stopped in a lay-by and turned the ignition off... Turned ignition back on and it started after a couple of splutters... engine management light came back on.

Rode it slowly back home, but noticed that if I accelerated gently the light went out, as soon as I backed off on the throttle the light came back on with the bike lurching as the light went on and off.
It progressively got worse in the last 1/2 mile of getting home... at a steady 30mph the bike was picking up revs then dropping down again until it finally stalled & died as I turned onto my driveway.

I haven't checked anything yet on the bike as I just parked it in the garage and jumped on my old XT600 and set of for work again.

Throttle Position Sensor I'm thinking?

Anyone got any other causes or ideas? It would be most appreciated! Cheers!

Have you checked for codes, available through the dash on your bike?

Then can you tell us whether there are any mods, such as end can, decat headers, ECU reflash etc.

Wiz Performance ECU reflash, Standard headers have been 'decatted' and a Mivv end can fitted.

Not had chance to even look at the bike yet as I'm at work. :(

Not sure on how to check the codes tbh... will search forum later for process unless someone can point me to the post... :)

Boris has posted a few pages but I see the 2010 Gen1 manual is available online, just use Dr. Google. This will lead you through a fault find, starting with entering diagnostic mode, always remembering the need to disconnect the fuel pump to avoid flooding the engine.

However, the mods to your bike will add a complexity to the analysis. I'm thinking TPS or fuel pump, but let's see what diag tells us.

Check the plug on the right side of the throttle body, and the same on the left side, but now it's a hose that goes to the vacuum sensor. if with open throttle the light goes off, and when you decelerate it comes on, probably air is getting in where it shouldn't, you lose vacuum and that's why it accelerates on its own
A worn TPS would cause a jump in throttle or misreading at the wear location, but at 26,000 miles, it's hardly worn out....but 2010, it's likely any rubber (hose) has suffered from these the last 12 years

Thanks for all your input:):( guys... I'll start looking at the hoses first as that's an easy fix when I get home tonight.
I'll let you know how it goes later on.

I feckin' hate anything electrical going wrong especially with ECU or Fuel Injection systems... it does my feckin' head in!!!:mad::mad:

Give me a nice set of carbs anyday!

I second the comment to check the vacuum caps and lines, especially on the left side where the pressure sensor is. Almost classic symptoms of an intake vacuum leak.

There was also a recall on the wiring harness that caused some funny idle/RPM issues. Not sure if that involved a check engine light though.

Right,
Replaced the rubber hose for a clear pipe.
No change.
Bike starts, EML comes on and goes off… then the revs go up and down at tickover then it eventually stalls.
Had the airbox off, checked all connections under there that I could see, nothing obvious loose or damaged.
No code on dash either when engine stalled.
Had these codes come up after doing the diagnostic test above…
In order.
00/d60
14/d:01
00/d:70
00/d:63
9/d:62
001/d:62

Not sure if I’ve done this right tbh… it’s says that a code should appear where the clock is after the engine stops…No code appears where I can see…

that’s enough for now

060 is a throttle body code. I got that one once when I accidentally swapped the throttle body connector with the rightmost coil connector.

Just started it again, same thing as before but the EML light stayed on after I blipped the throttle….
I caught an error code before it disappeared off the screen ‘13’…
Wtf is that now?…ABS… FFS!!

13 is the air intake pressure sensor - open or short circuit detected.
14 is intake air pressure sensor - hose clogged or detached.

Here are screenshots from the manual. I'd start with the air intake hose.

All the other codes you posted are stand alone codes indicating that your bike went in and out of "malfunction." This corresponds with what you described about your ride home.

You said that you “replace the hose”…..that hose is on the left TBody….on the right TBody, in that same place there is a rubber cap….is that cap ok?
