Check out the Gaerne Fastback Endurance. Excellent protection and easy to walk in. Probably overkill for those who stick to paved and unpaved roads. But they'll be my next dirt bike boot.

Thanks. I watched the clip. It's a crazy good boot. In fact, Gaerne makes great stuff. I've been speaking with Brian from Atomic Moto, and he's been a great guide through this analysis. What I have taken from him is this: 1) wear as much protection as you can stand, 2) Hinged boots are the way to go.

Note: last Sunday went out for a ride in the Santa Monica mountains, and we stopped several times on the side of the road in Gravel. I lost my footing twice with the boots I was wearing, so I am considering lugged soles (enduro style) as well.

Lugged soles for sure, they'll help keep the S10's rubber side down on dirt/gravel roads.

That what I have seen. It seems like the A* Toucans are awesome, but the price tag is too expensive for my taste. At that price I would be using Sidi Crossfires and live with the Frankenwalk.

Just want to touch on the Gaerne boots..... I have a pair of the full on MotoCross SG12 race boots. I wear them when im on the Tenere, cross country, Etc. Probably way over kill for most folks. I will give these boots 5 STARS. Once they are broken in they are FANTASTIC. They have saved me from breaking my foot or ankle three times. Two on the right on and one on the left. In one case I fell on one of the mountain passes in Colorado. The bike landed on my right ankle and pinched me to the ground. It really hurt but no broken bones and no blood. I was pretty lucky. IMOP the Gaerne boots are some of the best boots out and have served me VERY well. I have over 35K miles on my boots and are still TOP-NOTCH. Just like the video brought up, the soles of my boots still look virtually new, and I stand up A LOT. These things are going to last MANY more years.
NOTE: My boots (SG12) do not claim to be water proof, they have no gortex- Etc.... I have NEVER had any rain or water enter the boots... Ive ridden many creek and river crossings and ridden in the rain a million times, no water or moisture. Thumbs up on the Gaerne boot ! I really cant think of or say one negative thing or anything to raise a concern.

I think Gaerne is an outstanding brand, maybe even the best. But, I have an additional limitation with my boot selection: skinny calves. Calf size is 13 1/2". So many boots just won't fit despite wearing thick MX socks (and I do not want to ride with a knee / shin protector anymore in my boot).

Im a skinny guy, I understand... I took off the top buckle off my SG12 boots. This will allow the Velcro tab at the top to be pulled more around my calf. The top buckle prevented this from happening in "stock boot" form. With normal motorcycle sox the boots fit great to the top. I even pull my riding pants over the boots. The second buckle down can still be easily adjusted to supply enough support for my body type. No problem. The boots that I have, all the buckles come off with 3-4 small screws for quick and easy replacement. In my case it made it very easy to take the top buckle off to try it out.... Ive never put it back on it and works fantastic... If I wanted to put the top buckles back on it would take about five minutes...

What Boots are you wearing?
I wear Alpine Star Scouts for road riding and Gaerne ED Pros for dirt, both have lugged soles. The ED Pros are a nice comfortable Adv touring boot but the toe box isn't armored. I broke a bone in my foot as a result of a very slow speed impact to the toe box.

Honestly, at this point I think I may just buy the A* Tech 3 Enduro. It's only $220 and offers more protection than some of the ADV style boots. Since they are not very comfy for walking, I may just pack some flip flops or sneakers on the bike, for when we stop, and walk around anywhere.

If you haven't bought a pair of boots, I would like to add that I use the Corazal boots and I am very happy with them.

All boots are a bit large and you have to train yourself with the technique to slip the boot under and outside the gear protector quickly. By the second ride I was used to it.

Pros- They are super comfortable. They look amazing. They don't make my feet sweat too much. And protection is super adequate.

Cons - They are a bit slippery. I don't have other boots to compare with except my Timberland boots that I used to wear which were a big mistake but super grippy on tarmac. These not so much but they do grip on the road. They squeak a bit when you walk but any plastic lubricant spray would fix that right up.

The reason I am super happy with them is because I would get hurt on my shins every time with the metal pegs of the super tenere. Not any more.
And yes I had a crash again where I was thrown off the bike at 60mph. They protected my legs so well that nothing happened to them. They took some damage but I still use them and they work perfect.

If not this boot then I would suggest any boot as long as they are tall and protect your entire shin up to the knees where the knee protectors on jeans or adv pants will help. Dont get short ankle boots even if they are motorcycle specific ones.

Cheers
