Caught myself going 70mph on a dirt road on an unchaperoned demo ride!
Found out the ABS is handy and the TC works on that run, too.;)
I ordered a new ST that very day and have enjoyed every mile since I got mine 9/4/12.
Dealer bought the demo bike for himself and then did THIS to it.
Rednecks had rutted out a muddy section of his favorite shortcut home and he found the hole in the puddle.
Took a truck and tow strap to get it out.

To be fair, my higher speeds on gravel road or playa were on S10s with full top of the line Ohlins/Touratech suspension that was fairly well dialed in. I've taken the FJR up to higher speeds on the playa and equal speeds on gravel with it's fully dialed aftermarket suspension as well, but with a CT on the rear and street moto tire on the front. It's partly set up, partly comfort level and local knowledge. I'm certainly not 'all that' as a rider, just an average rider that put a lot of miles on those platforms and knows what they do under those conditions. I was accused of taking my FJR places GS guys wouldn't ride more than once, but honestly I think that said more about certain GS riders than it did about me. I have quite a bit more time on the playa outside Gerlach than the average rider, simply because I went there 3-4 times a year for well over a decade.

On the S10? 70 whatever MPH. There is a dirt road that saves you around 30 miles from Vegas to Caliente its well maintained better than any fire road you have ever been on. Its flat and straight with long sight lines for much of it. Also near zero chance of running into LEO.

(175 MPH in a Z06 at the Salt Flats if we are counting 4 wheels)
Tell me more about this dirt road between Caliente and Vegas. I need to get out and explore more of the dirt areas around me...

On 93 heading towards Alamo. There is a dirt road off to the right Kane Springs Road not sure how it is marked these days Used to have a decent sign. 36.962371770774425, -114.97076348493941 (cut and paste that into google)
Nice well maintained will drop you on the back side of Elgin and becomes a paved road there at the apple orchard. If you haven't been to the area go stop by the school for a quick look around. From Elgin to Caliente is a pretty canyon road worth the trip alone.

Another trip to consider is Adaven (Nevada backwards) Alpaca farms, free range cattle, decent stream and campground/picnic spot Tons of dirt roads up there that are more or less maintained to some degree. Nothing I wouldn't hesitate to take a stock accord on. The roads up there flop back and forth between 375 and 318 so you can't get too lost. Abandoned mines and ranches all over.

The problem is when you're doing 30 and the trailer starts doing 35.
Yeah - You'll remember that I knew I was in trouble when out of the corner of my eye I saw the trailer was about to pass me.

When you see that happening just move to the pillion seat. You're about to be taken for a ride.

Nevada has quite a few. Head 20 minutes outside of Las Vegas, and turn any direction off the highway, there will be a road worth exploring.

I literally spent 3 days on one from Las Vegas to Reno in my Jeep days. Essentially no pavement in-between the 400 something miles.

I recommend you simply go down to the Mead Substation and take Burro Wash Road out to the cove through the slot canyons. That is not far from where you live and you can spend all day riding and even make your way to Lake Mohave via sand washes. I really miss riding out there. Of course I don't recommend the Super Tenere for that!

I didn't know KTM did trailers.
I dislike having a small top case on my KTM. I'm sure not going to hobble it with a trailer. It's the kind of bike that needs to run free.

In keeping with the theme of this thread, I think the fastest I've had the SAS off pavement is only around 60 MPH. It's a cast wheel, no skid plate, currently with 90/10 tires. That's plenty fast enough for me. I do see it as my street bike and not really a serious dirt bike. Although it's capable of more off pavement that I'm willing to put it through.

Right now, the only vehicle I have is my 2011 4x4 Tacoma. I haven't had the ST for a few years and I just sold my quad. It threw me off on my last trip to Dumont last month, and since i'm turning 50 this year, I decided that was enough. I did put down a deposit on a Polaris RS1, but the earliest I will see that is July...

Nothing wrong with that decision. The Polaris is going to be a blast. A buddy of mine has one and and it is the perfect desert runner!! Dumont dunes can be brutal for sure!!. Thank you for posting and your input.

That single seater looks to be very interesting model. Perfect for us guys who's wive's don't like off road travel.
