I had to remove my tank for something else and I remembered this so I decided to check. Booooyyyy Glad I did. WTF, is there a dead bird in here ???? I don't have any clue of what that is. Bike at 36K. I cleaned it as the inside of the tank. I used the air gun inside the tank as there was some of that stuff inside.

That trash did not come through the hose of a public gas station in the USA because they are all equipped with filters, maybe it’s different in Canada ?

That’s insane! I’d like to know how well your bike runs once you replace the filter.

It will be hard to say since I did not took the bike since the beginning of last winter. And now I have a lot of work on the bike because of a fire in my garage. It won't be before weeks. Dont know if my butt will remember or feel it. Sure it won't be worst.

So Mr KlingKlang do you have any idea how all that crap got into your Tenere gas tank in only 36,000 kilometers ?

How does less fuel getting through to your motor result in the motor using more fuel? I can understand the drop in performance but not the drop in mpg

Motors are designed to have the right fuel mixture. Too much or too little will make it struggle and decrease gas mileage.

Nope… I let the tank dry completely for a week and shot air inside and there was some of that stuff going out. First impression, it was looking like varnish and I think of some kind of product Yamaha may have used as a liner inside the tank that is going out. If it is that then it is scary. Rust here and there around the tank on a 2016 bike not impress me for the quality so… .. Hope it just came from some bad gas I got from a foreign places I went……

I just looked in my tank of my 2013 and it looked shiney. I aslo ran a scope in my 2004 ZRX 1200. It looked good too. I pulled the black edge of the bottom of my tank and about 10 inches of paint came off with it. Rusty ass hell. I sanded and rattle canned it white. Lucky it was easy to match white. If I ever put the edge back on it will have some holes drilled in it.. My tea bag didn't have anything big like Klingllang's but mine was very more brown all over. I did another mpg test and I think I picked up about 2mpg. 38mpg to 40ish.

Yep she definitely needed a fresh filter, there even was a small animal inside!9A078836-1163-4815-A794-A3BA4F68ADDA.jpegC638F041-86FB-4048-93F0-4DBD11934ABF.jpeg
Now adding the Yamalube fuel system cleaner and stabilizer. Curious if I will notice any difference in the spring.

USA fuel is garbage and full of dirt and sediment. I don't care what gas stations claim they have for filters. Close to being just a sieve. Yamaha really missed the mark on a serviceable high level of filtration filter for the fuel system. Pretty much my only disappointment with the bike.

Seems to be quite a few Tenere riders reporting fuel filter problems.
My Goldwing has 562,000 miles , the fuel filter is similar and has never been touched so it leaves my wondering how all that dirt has been getting into your tanks and not mine.

Yeah but what does the filter look like? A hunk of charcoal?

A Guglatech question: The Guglatech filter catches water so it won't mix into the fuel. So, how often do you need to pull the Guglatech from the tank filler and dump out all the crap? I'm planning a ride in India within the next year, and will be putting a GTech filter in before I go, because I know there will be dirty fuel along the way. I may just pull the tank and check that pump filter before I go, as well.

I sent an email to BestRest about this as well, and here was the reply I got:

[T]he filter will collect water as advertised. When that happens two things will happen:

1. If your fuel has any ethanol additives, the water will bond to the ethanol and <slowly> pass thru the filter. That can take several days or weeks. During that time the engine will run normally and a bit of water isn't a problem. Almost all of the water will remain in the bag.

2. As for constantly removing the bag, that's not necessary. When refueling you can look down inside and see if there's accumulated water. You'd know this when your gas tank is nearly empty, but the bag shows some fluid sloshing around. That slosh is water buildup. Should this happen you can gently pull and twist the filter up and out of the tank, pour out the water and reinstall.

I've pulled my own filters half a dozen times to dump water, and as long as I do it carefully it's not an issue. Remember to use an install tool to spread the bag after it goes into the tank, otherwise the bag can remain folded and that will slow down fuel flow when you refuel the bike.
