I’m looking to buy a Super Tenere soon. I have noticed that the vast majority of Super Ts for sale on Craigslist and Cycletrader are model year 2012 and 2014. Very very few other years. Is this because there are problems with these model years? Or were they very popular that year and they are getting older and people are getting rid of them? Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this subject.

I’d be curious of the units actually sold by year. I’m guessing that as an exciting new model in 2012 it was the year with the most units sold.

Lots of small but very nice Improvements in 2014 plus Tenere’s, that’s actually why I traded my good running 2013 for a brandnew 2018, for me the main reason was to get cruise control.

As far as problems go, no, there aren't any that are unique to the 2014 model. It currently suffers from the brake light switch that's subject to a recall from Yamaha, but so does every S10 made between 2014 and 2020. 77,000 miles on my 2014, and it's still as reliable as a hammer.

My Gen 1 had a recall for the headlight harness and a fuel pump o’ring failure (mine leaked out of the crate). The only problem
on my 2015 Gen 2 is the current front brake switch recall. Otherwise, flawless with 45,000 miles.

Opinion: The '12 owners are "trading up" for a Gen 2. The '14 owners could be trading up to a newer version, but it's quite likely they're changing makes. Many here have voiced their disappointment with the lack of improvements/features. Others have already jumped ship for something different.

2012 are now 9 years old , that's why I have a 2019 or is it a 2020 ,2019 I think . was nothing wrong with my '12 but age and it was showing ,but the bones were good. in some ways the 12 is the better bike, as for me the 2019 es doesn't have the grunt of the first gen bike. but heated grips are actually pretty damn nice when its cold , have cruise control but rarely us it , ES is nice and after a year I have finally (I think ) have a good setting for my riding style . had a dash failure on the '19 and now a recall for a switch . so far I like the 19 but not bonded with it as I was with the 12 . kind of miss the 12 . I was actually going to buy a BMW GS but the dealer was nothing but attitude so I left and the next day traded for the 19 ES . 2020 has been weird and 2021 has not started out any better , blizzard this past week in central Texas ,75 yesterday so the snow is gone , but lots of sand on the highways and intersections to make life interesting . now im rambling on .

A lot of us went from the original 2012 to the Gen2 when it came out in 2014. A lot of people have moved from the 2014 to newer bikes of the same model for the minor improvements and just to have a newer bike.

There are lots of reasons to sell or trade. I think many people get close to the 26,000 mile valve adjustment interval and sell or trade the bike rather than go through the hassle and expense. Also, if you bought the extended warranty it runs out after 5 years and some might sell or trade then. Sure, it can be extended, but many see this as a time to sell or trade. And of course there's the desire to try something different syndrome.
I bought a leftover 2013 in 2015. It's been a good bike, but I'm not sure if I would buy another one...that would be like marrying the same woman twice.

I’ve owned a PDP 2012 (later sold to someone wanting one online), bought a new 2013/rode 36500 miles, which was traded on another new 2013 when Yamaha was dumping them for $9000.00 in 2015, rode the second 2013 25500 miles/sold outright, and bought my current Gen II used with 4500 miles in 2017 (has 45000 miles on it) that I plan to keep for a while. I am interested to see if Honda will be bringing the rumored Africa Twin based sport tourer with the DCT trans as I will be looking for a lighter bike and do like the DCT. I like the Super Tenere a lot (obviously), but will have owned one or another since August 2011. It may be time for a change as I don’t ride the S10 as much other than really long days or multi day trips. I bought a Tracer 900 GT which is a great bike that weighs more than 100 lbs less than the S10 which is significant as I age. I ride the Tracer and my Tenere 700 way more times than the S10.

I tend to stick with bikes that fit and work good for me.......owned 9 different KLRs over 25 years, 3 ST1300s, and 3 DR350S..........pretty boring with not much interest in other motorcycles.

A new bike is gonna cost a bit more than even that service. And, if that new bike is another brand. . . . make that quite a bit more since the Tenere is on the lower end of the cost scale. Maybe just a renewing of vows?

No since fixin' it, if it ain't broke.

I’ve been a member of a lot of bike forums but this much info wasn’t expect but is tremendously helpful! Thanks for all the answers, guesses and opinions. I appreciate it all and if I end up with a super Tenere soon I’ll be sure to come back for all the other tips and tricks. Thanks everyone.

As mentioned above, I think a lot of 2012 & 2014 owners replace their older Tenere's with newer ones.

Purchased my 2014 Tenere in the summer of 2015 as a brand new left-over for $8,500 from a dealer in downtown Chicago.

The dealer had a total of 5 brand new Super Teneres, 2 of which were ES models.

60,000 trouble free miles in 6 years of ownership so far, and no plans to replace it.

The Tenere is such an easy bike to work on and very reliable.

If my 2014 was insurance totaled in a crash, I would find another 2014+ model to replace it.

Well I have sold my other two bikes and am now on the hunt for a 2013+ Super T. First time in a long long time the garage hasn't had any bikes in it! Got about $8k to spend and happy to travel anywhere in the US for one. Want a blue one if at all possible. If you see anything for sale that meets those marks let me know!

Yeah, I'm trying to decide between a Gen I that has been kitted out and a Gen II thats mostly stock. It seems my price point splits the bikes into those two categories pretty evenly. So I'm scouring the web and looking for whats out there.
