Well, I'm pleased to hear your bike started with some additional amperage.
Perhaps it was the cold temperatures or the age of the battery. Could be lack of use...gotta question for you.
If you store your bike or don't ride it for long periods of time or only do short rides, obviously all these conditions will likely result in a less than ideal battery condition or reduced voltage.
I store my bikes 2020 Africa Twin and a DR650 for approximately 4 months every year, and never a problem starting come spring weather, cause I place them both on battery tenders for the entire time and just forget about them.
I'm now riding a 2020 Africa Twin DCT and it comes with a Li-ion battery. (reduced weight).
My voltmeter tells me it's about 14.5 volts. That's more than the lead acid batteries used in the Tenere.

im a pretty consistent rider, it has set for less than a week and just got back from okc about a 4hr ride. I don’t keep batteries on trickle chargers but have never had an issue with batteries either, most do 4 years plus. That said Idont use cheap batterie. This is a factory battery on a bike I bought it new in Nov. Thought it was a demo model so it may have been used for a bit. Being a 2019 model the battery could be older. When it comes time for a new battery I will get the cca battery that is a step up.

I don't imagine the 20w-50 helped either. Especially if your temps are what ours are. Today was 17F for a high.
I believe it has 10-40 in it. I should check I bought a case of yamalube from the dealer when I picked the bike up. Even so it’s colder than 10-40 is recommended for.

Ah OKC, that would Oklahoma City.
Bet you're not going to ride at the present time.
Yikes!!! Y'all colder than we are.
I'm in Southern Ontario Stratford Ontario to be exact.

Is poor starting in cold weather common with S10s? It hasn’t been that cold here for a while but both my bikes started fine the other day having been left for several months. But they are both permanently hooked up to optimate chargers whenever they aren’t being ridden

Yup, that's what I do, put the battery (in the bike) on tender and forget about it until spring time.
No doubt, you fill with premium gas (no ethanol) and add stabilizer and then run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer is distributed.
Gas containing ethanol gathers or attracts moisture over time.
One final point. My DR650 has a lead acid battery, whereas my Africa Twin (2020) has a li-ion battery, requires a different battery tender.

It's a temperature thing I'm sure. He said his temp was lower than what 10w-40 is rated for. Right now, him and I have very low temps; unusual for us, normal for the great white north.

So the AFrica Twin comes from the factory with a lithium ion battery as standard equipment ?
My 2020 Africa Twin DCT model came with a lithium ion battery...much lighter than a lead acid battery and plenty of cranking power (amps).
Resting voltage around 14.5 V.

Due to our temps, and rolling power outages, the 'Tenders on the T-12, TW 200, and Honda powered riding mower are working hard to keep the charges. The Optimate on the Tenere shows to be working the hardest, probably because it's a four year old battery. I'm curious to see how much longer the battery lasts after this cold spell.

It's too cold for me. . . . when it's too cold for 20w-50. I'm done with cold weather riding. Beautiful picture though.

New to me trail east of Roosevelt Lake, off Rt 288. Cherry Creek Road, Trail 203 and 203A.

This was the 203A spur. I turned around here as it was getting late and weather was looking questionable. Stopped to take the last photo, just straddling the bike, and a big gust of wind literally blew me over. Won't do that again.

If you get tired of my posts, just tell me to back off. I figure given the weather across the country, pictures with sun, warmth, and a little sand may be appreciated.
Scouting entry to the Box Canyon Area east of 79, south of 60, and North of the Gila River. Tried from the west first. Pretty sure I could have made this hill, but there were several convoys coming against me, and if I met someone coming down it would not have ended well. Needed a spotter.

Headed down to East Price Road, following the Gila River. Over to North Box Canyon Road. Got my sand practice in today. Will go back and go further in the near future with more time.

Met a side by side limping out with 3 wheels, dragging the left rear axle. I caught up with him on the way out, raising clouds of dust. Hard to read the sand in all that dust. Finally got around when he hit some rocks.

There is a big Country Western festival here in non-covid times.
