I can make this trip other than June 24-27, 2021 time frame when attending the BMWOA national rally in Great Falls, MT with my BMW riding buddies. I have been through Sturgis numerous times (fortunately, never during Sturgis bike week). The Black Hills are about 1000 miles from my location.

crickets .
That's not crickets, that's the sound of my analysis paralysis kicking in, a small family drama, and a news junkie obsessed with a crazy week in the news. Between all that distraction, progress is being made.

The Black Hills are over 500 miles from my location in ND so I've been picking the brains of all my Black Hills resident motorcycle friends to get the best available information. They all have experience in running FJR rallies and Dual Sport Rallies in the Black Hills so I'm attempting to extrapolate all their knowledge and information to determine the best location for a Tenere Rally.

So far the best location idea appears to be The Crazy Horse Campground described in post #119 and the best weekend would likely be one of the last two weekends in July. Crazy Horse Campground and the nearby city of Custer just provides everything I could imagine needing for this group and if they don't have it Rapid City is 40 miles away. As Far as OHV trails go, being South a little bit is beneficial because it takes us out of the popular side by side traffic that really makes the Northern OHV trails less desirable for motorcycle traffic.

The original discussion of dates early in this thread were for near Sturgis Rally without overlapping so when I spoke to Crazy Horse that's all we spoke about when coming up with late July. If we zero in on Crazy Horse Campground as a likely location I will call her back on Monday morning and explore other available times for a larger group like this if Late July doesn't work.

If everyone thinks Crazy Horse Campground will work ok, all we have to do is Work with them to find the best available time frame and set a date.

set a date ...... the daunting aspect of a July date is riding through Texas Oklahoma Kansas Nebraska in July heat . might need some BBQ sauce to pour over my head , cause it will be cooked ,lol.
the camp ground looks great .

Amp ground looks good. Both July dates works for me. Depending on which one I may do a side trip up to Idaho visit some family and possible work in some bdr arction. Sounds fun thanks for organizing all this I know it’s lots of work. I’m excited to get to meet some of the inmates here.

Let me weigh in. I am part of the group Abercrombie is part of here in South Dakota. I have been involved in setting up 2 rallies a year for the past 10 years or so. NO!! I am not volunteering, just adding some wisdom.

Deadwood area is not a bad place to be but when you are thinking about coming, most places will be booked.

Nemo Guest Ranch, although a good place in the fall is slammed packed in the mid summer with side X sides. The trails leading out of there are getting very chewed up. NGR also has a dubious recent past with business instability. They have had a hard time keeping the restaurant/bar open and often the pay showers don't work. Accommodations are... very rustic. Held a fall rally there a few years ago and haven't considered it since

Fish N Fry CG is always slammed. Great people run it but I'm sure they are booked.

Custer Crossing Campground will the site of this Spring's rally for our group. They have nice cabins, tent sites and electric hookups for RVs. New owners who are eager to please. Its between Deadwood and Hill City and very centrally located. The owners love dual sport riders. Prices are far and access is good. They are likely fairly open for dates. Only issue is they are fairly close to a major road and some may think too close. They have a cafe and small store. Restaurants, stores and other motels are a far distance away but not bad.Custer

Crazy Horse CG in Custer has been the site of out last two fall rallies and will be again next fall. The owners are wonder to work with and have a cool CG. Tent sites, nice cabins, and plenty of full hookups for RVs. They have a small store on site but no restaurant. Stores, restaurants, and motels are close by. Summers in the southern Hills are hot. There is some amazing big bike riding in that area. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave National parks are close by. Custer to Deadwood is a bit over an hour, depending on traffic.

The week before the Sturgis Rally would be pushing it for any road riding in the Hills. One person said that bikers would be better than cars, rethink that. Roads the week before and during Sturgis Rally are a quagmire at best. 40 bikers at 55 mph, down to 30 on each curve can be frustrating if your trying to get somewhere. At least you filter your way through spread out cars. The goal is to stay off the asphalt as much as possible.

Trail stickers are required if you will be riding on the trail system. Fire roads and country roads are free to ride without a sticker.

If you are looking to be as central as possible, Custer Crossing may be the best bet.

Just my two cents. You are free to pick my brain if you'd like.

For what its worth... I ride both an S10 and a T7.

Thanks for the input Dan. The group I rode with last September stopped in at Custer Crossing campground for lunch so I've looked the place over first hand but I sort of discounted the place because I was worried about capacity for our group and no experience camping there.

Update, I just spoke to Custer Crossing and they have several time frames that would work. She said she would be happy to have us and the place would allow us to be grouped together. Analysis paralysis has just been exasperated.

Glad I could help. Don't hesitate to throw questions my way. Would love to attend this but at this point I have no idea if its possible. I have 3 commitments for this year already and a 4th in the works. If it works out I will attend. If I do attend I would willing to lead a couple rides.

Let me add, if you pick date get on it for your reservations. These places will only hold for so long.

Happy New Year!
The Black Hills sounds like a terrific rally region. Looks like about 1365 miles for me.
COVID disrupted many of my activities. Was there ever an Arkansas Rally? If not, is Arkansas still in the cards as a destination?
I'm so looking forward to packing up the tent and gear for a journey in '21.

I really appreciate all of the effort you are making on getting a rally (gathering) put together.
I know we have been looking at mid/late July. Is mid/late June an option as well?
Seems like it might be a little cooler.
Either way, I hope to attend.

Yes, from the early discussion I took it that late July was desired but since then I've seen other time frames have been brought up so I'm looking into it.

Since Greatbuffalo brought up Custer Crossing campground, I've reconsidered it as a location and called to find all available dates. They reported that they were available for our group the last week of June, the last three weeks of July and August 19th - 22nd. I also called Crazy Horse campground back on other available times in June but they've not responded to my voice mail this afternoon. I will call her back first thing in the morning to attempt to get more available dates and then put it out to the masses on choice of location and dates.
