Hi all,

I want to install the gear indicator that I bought from china. I removed the tank and air filter box and spent over 2h looking for the speed connector that I am supposed to use but could not locate it....any help please? I have added the photos of the gear indicator for easy reference

Not sure, but I think the Super Tenere uses the ABS sensors to measure speed, not a separate speed sensor? I could be wrong, but I'm thinking back to discussions about fitting a speedometer correcting device such as a SpeedHealer and it not being a simple plug and play. Anyway, I thought both gens of the Super Ten already had gear indicators?

Thanks. not sure if I should call it speed sensor or ABS sensor ( I am not a DIY guy as you could see!), the gear indicator is supposed to connect to a speed connector and the crankshaft position sensor. could not locate either of them.
yeah the Gen 2 has no gear indicator unfortunately :(((

Not a Gen 1 feature, unfortunately. Wish it was, I get tired of counting (and losing my place).

My Gen 2 certainly has one! I select gears mostly by feel so I'm not sure how useful the indicator is, maybe as much a distraction as anything. Only one case where I've found it handy. I occasionally forget to upshift to 6th on the freeway. Another case where I think it would be useful is to confirm which gear your in when you stop, but the display disappears when the clutch is pulled in! Sometimes with quick or sudden stops I've found I didn't quite make it all the way back to 1st gear, and the only way to confirm it is old-school fiddling with the shifter and neutral light.

Sure it does, as WJB pointed out. It just doesn't display when the clutch lever is pulled in.....
The Gen 1 bikes (like the OPs) do not have a gear indicator. The Gen 2's use a calculation method rather than an actual pick up (which would have required a redesign to the motor cases), hence blanking out when pulling in the clutch.

The connector you posted does look the same as the aux lighting connector, but that won't help with a gear indicator.

@Purificator81 - Whoa! Step away from the bike and take a deep breath.

Now, put everything you took apart back together.

The plugs you can't find are under the right side panel that comes off with 1/4 turn fasteners, tucked up in the wiring and capped with a blank plug end. The three pin aux connector there is normally used for lights and the four pin connector is used for heated grips, If I recall correctly. I tossed all my notes on this stuff some time ago, since I no longer own a Super Ten.

You can find a speed signal on the right side of the bike as well. You're looking for a grey wire, but I've forgotten which spot to look for it. Sorry. It's much easier from the rear brake area, as I recall, then from the loom under the seat. The Cruise Control installs will be using that signal as well as the Healtech Speedohealer installs. Searching for Speedohealer and Rostra should help you find info.

I would be very surprised if your China kit was plug and play off the stock aux connector pins, but power and ground are available there, as is a switched power and if I remember, an ECU wire, but I don't remember what that is for with the OE parts.

. . . . I get tired of counting (and losing my place).
“I know what you're thinking. Did he shift six times, or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself.

+1. I shift when she feels like she needs to be shifted. Except from 5-6. 5 and 6 feel about the same to me. Before I set my cruise, I make sure my indicator say 6.

Thank you all. The gear indicator works for most yamaha bikes except for supertenere. I found out from a group on facebook. Glad that I paid only 15 bucks for this. Will learn to memorise gears....at least it would keep my brain active!

The problem is the ST has 6 gears which would require the use of both hands to keep count, not leaving at least one to keep the bike pointing in the right direction.

A quick update. I ended up installing it thanks to the Gipro installation indicated here! It works flawlessly! Really spot on each time. Drove 500kms and it works like a charm!

I know this post is almost a year old, but other people might still look for a gear indicator, so I add my bit.
( Seems like you need to register and log in to see the pics in full size / sharp )
I installed a Gipro today.
What I do like, is that you can position the gear indicator really in a natural place, without it being like a pimple on the dashboard.
These kind of gear indicatores simply do not match with most bikes dashboards, but the Super Tenere allows positioning the gear indicator in a really nice place.

It was easy to install, I followed the link in this thread. ( https://www.healtech-electronics.com/docs/Supplementary%20Manuals/GPX-U01__Yamaha_XT1200Z__2010-2013.pdf )
However, this was a very delicate operation as there is almost no room and from 20 wires you have very carefully cut and extend one:

Another helpful link is this one, although it's about another device, it explains very well how to get to the ECU connector plug pictured above:
