Hi all,

I need to change my front tire and I would like some recommendations based on the flowing notes:
  • My rear tire is a Metzeler Tourance Next with 8.000 Kms
  • Front tire (the one to replace) is a Metzeler EXP with 20.000 kms
  • I am considering a 90/10 -80/20 usage.
  • My decision driver is grip and not millage

I am looking at the following tires
  1. Pirelli Scorpion Trail II
  2. Conti Trail Attack 3 wing
  3. Metzeler Tourance Next

Any suggestion?

Many thanks,

Artur

If you're not set on those three, take a look at picking up some Bridgestone Battle Wings. The came OE, they're cheap, and I liked the grip. There's a question as to whether they've been discontinued or not. I switched from them, to the Bridgestone A41s. They're 90/10 tires, and they seem to grip good; haven't been down the same roads that I tested the Battle Wings on though. If you ARE set on those three, my pick would be the Pirellis. Those are my second choice if the A41s don't pan out.

The Tourance Next work well on the front, am really impressed with it. Currently on the second one of these. I also have Next on the rear.

I ran EXPs prior to the Nexts, and would have stuck with them if still available. The Nexts are at least every bit as good.

I only ride on tarmac, and have ridden, motorway, country lanes, mountain passes, wet and dry and had no issues. I will use them again. (Note, I’m not really a plod along type rider, I like to get a move on)

From your list, I've run both the Pirelli and Metzler Next. So far the Pirelli is my favorite with excellent wet weather behavior and wear. Running the Pirelli's, I changed them at ~11,500 miles only due to a longer trip coming up. Both front and rear easily had another 1,500 miles in them before the wear bars.

YMMV

Had the Pirelli Scorp Trails they were ok, developed a split in the rear early. Had the Conti Trail Attack 3's absolutely amazing tire better than the Pirelli, Pirelli is an over rated tire you're really just paying extra for the logo on the side. The pirelli felt good but the Conti felt like I was glued to the road even in massive downpour. Such a confidence inspiring tire the Trail Attack 3's are my go to when not running TKC 80's for dirt stuff. They are stiff as shit though and harder to mount than most tires, even more than the Pirelli.

Search is your friend, as there are numerous similar threads.

fwiw, You might also consider adding the Avon AV53 TrailRiders to the list.

I rode many sets of the A40’s and loved them. Tried a set of the a41’s and hate them. Plus poor mileage. Now I’m shopping Amazon and finding A40’s for $78 shipped. Once they are gone not sure what I’ll do.

More details please. What were the differences between the two, and what did you hate about the A41s?

Sierra,
I live in Western North Carolina with LOTS of curves and the A41’s just never felt good when carving the curves. AND the mileage was a lot less. They wore strangely.

That being said I just yesterday took an A40 off the rear and only got 3,358 miles on it. Here it is.

Just fitted Michelin road 5s. Wow. What a difference. Road tyre but amazing in wet and dry. Love em.

I am also running these tyres and find them fantastic.. Not intended for dirt so doesn't meet your 20/80 dirt/road requirement but for road use they are great, tremendous grip and handling..

Roadtec 01 and Trail Attack 3 are excellent road tires. TA3 out performed the PR5 in Mottoradd testing.
