:( I have all of the above except the time. I would not want to camp off the bike for that long of a ride. I figured I would need at least 2 weeks off for this. I wish you guys the best of fun. Yes, my first thought was you were going to attempt the "Tour of Idaho" on the beast.
It would be great if you could join us. Someday your going to look back and say “I wish I spent more time at work”. Said no one ever.

Someday I want to do the “Tour of Idaho” ride. It starts literally 5 miles from my house. I have ridden the starting section many times on many different bikes. Even a small section on the Tenere.

The Tenere is the wrong tool for that ride. It’s singletrack, and very technical.

ballistic , july is a long way off , not sure if I can make it or have time to do the whole route . but it is fun to plan ….. you and I are probably close in ability so it would be fun to have someone like me to ride with..... also you me or anyone else does not have to ride the whole thing. its designed to do all or part and one could simple decide ,today I have to leave for home and leave . do the math and see what you can do if any of it , then by june you should be sure of your choice... I have to come up from texas , gps says it is 1300 plus miles just to get to the start. that's 2600 miles round trip and not even considering the milage on the trail. for me to do the whole thing it is almost 5200 miles , ouch my butt hurts just thinking about it . I will not know till june myself what I am able to do if anything. just a thought for you to consider . not a person reading this has to make a choice till july 2020 , that is a no pressure plan I like .

Had my July not already been planned-out for next year, I would have certainly joined you guys..............
12th-18th I'll be taking the Wife and Kids to Tetons and Glacier National Parks, then 26th-Aug 1st I'll be spending that week with some close friends near Red Lodge Montana.......................just can't swing 3-weeks off together...........

Just wanted to note.

To complete this ride in the time allotted will require 200-250 mile days on mainly dirt roads.
What I am saying here is you have to be comfortable maintaining a 50mph average for 5 hours each day. If you are uncomfortable riding on dirt roads at that speed, this might not be the ride for you.

I am not against getting a motel room here or there, but would like to camp off the bike.

Put me down as a strong possibility.
I'm retired so I can be flexible with the time.
No problem for me to camp off of the bike.
It's about 2400 miles from KY so I need to figure if I can ride the bike or haul the bike.
I'd also like to study the tracks and look at some ride reports to get a better feel of what the terrain is like.

I like a more relaxed pace , mak10 already knows that about me . what I have seen in just watching videos of other riders is that it seems that most sections are less than 150 miles , and depending on conditions that would determine speeds . I do gravel roads here , and can do 30-50 mph if conditions seem right. so the rub for me would be if it seemed that the end was more important than the middle. might be a flower I need to photograph. or just look at the view. I don't have to do it all , but doing what I can in the time I have would be great. and I would hope to camp each day . and make new friends .

This is a 1250 mile BRDR ride. I imagine the route itself will take a good week. I am thinking a max of 4-5 riders.

I will be preferring to camp off the bike. Plan on rain. A few things that are a must.

A sat tracker (spot, inreach) device.
Appropriate tires.
Ability to ride 50+ mph on a dirt road.
Adequate camp gear, rain gear, etc.

Any thoughts? Dates?

This is not to be confused with the ride called “Tour of Idaho “. That is a plated dirt bike ride that looks fun as well. Just not on a Tenere.
We did it the first week of July and we were breaking snow.
As for planning, plan for extreme heat. It was 104deg at Glenn’s Ferry and we had a couple more in the upper 90’s.
Plan on showers. We stayed the night in Yellow Pine and the locals told us about some cool places to visit. Riders Rest in Elk City has camp spots and showers. Warm Lake has a nice campground with showers and restaurant. Bergdorf Hot Springs is another nice place to stay and they have pizza.

We treated it like bar hopping dirt road ride and had a great time. We ran across other group of riders that were treating it like a survivor ride/race and they were not happy with each other.

Thanks for your honesty Mak. The reality is while I'm capable of doing 50MPH on a dirt road, that is too fast an average speed for me to maintain for a whole day. I appreciate you explaining what kind of riding you plan on. That will weed out the guys like me who don't want to run that hard.

just thinking that a 50 mph average is pretty fast , that your running 70 as much as your running 30 …. just some thoughts .
I have a pretty good idea this is going to be a "big boys ride". Only guys who are into running a very brisk pace. 20 yeas ago I would do it. These days I'm riding a much slower pace and don't camp as much.

I know exactly what you are talking about!! I have been on more than a few "fun trail rides" that turned into a race. Or ended up being so fast a pace I was wiped out at the end of the day..

I will be watching this thread and all I can do is hope that I make it.
I can't plan for next week much less next year.
My wife has been talking about us riding back to Hyder, Alaska to see the bears again. I would do that with her in a seconds notice.
https://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/2up-to-hyder-alaska-to-see-the-bears.12837/
If I do make the Idaho ride, I will only camp. [I'm a never moteler]
Any pace is fine with me but I really like taking pictures. I don't mind riding sun up to sun down ether.

In that Hyder ride you will see that we did stay in an Inn while in Hyder. That was because there are grizzly walking around town at night.
When we pulled up to the Inn the owner came out and said "if you have any food in them side boxs, get it out , A grizzly just destroyed a pickup parked right there last night to get to a cooler"
We got a room on the bottom floor with my bike right out front of my window. The window was right next to the side of the bed so I could look out and see my bike. Well about 1:00 in the morning a big Grizzle was on the patio right out side my window that would have made him about 3 feet away with only glass between us. I told Michelle that next time we are getting a room on the upper floor , forget the bike!

average speeds , seem doable , but not what they seem . baja 1000, 2018, won buy a honda 450x . 882 miles (so not quite the 1000 ) in 16 hours , that is an average of 49 mph . 1200 miles at 50 mph average is just 24 hours . my trip to roswell of 535 miles was an average of 44 mph …… I road the speed limit only stopping for gas and that was the average. now Idaho bdr can not be as tuff as baja , so no reason some A class riders can not do the whole length in 24 hours , now that could be a contest ...… I like to smell the roses , so I would not be interested in this type of ride . you have to ride so much faster than 50 mph to maintain 50mph average. 1200 miles divided by say 150 mile sections is 8 days or 8 sections ,at a 50 mph average it would take3 hours , 150 miles at 30 mph average would be 5 hours ,225 miles would be covered in 7.5 hours . if one did the 1200 miles in 5 sections at 225 miles each at 30 mph average it would take 5.3 days to do the 1200 miles.

Trust me not many guys are going to average 50mph for hours on end. Mac and Eemsreno are hard core riders. I would be left in the dust crying!! I'm planning out a more local baby ride: https://ridebdr.com/cabdr-south/

I already did a small portion of the AZBCDR and it was a blast.

Mak, why ride only 5 hours a day? Even camping and a very relaxed pace of breakfast and breaking camp you can be KSU at 9am. Ride 7-8 hours and still plenty of time to set up camp and cook dinner before dark. That could take your rolling average speed down to 25-35 mph.

Watching the YouTube videos of my his ride tells me we are not going to average 50mph for 5 hours. It’s probably going to be 8-10 hr days in the saddle. Add in photo stops, snack breaks, etc on top.

After watching the videos, with the timeframe of days chosen to complete makes this an advanced ride. The mileage alone is tough.

I don’t want to mislead anyone into believing this is a ride for someone just starting to ride on dirt. Adding a loaded bike only makes it harder. Rocks, creek crossings, mud, and maybe snow.

I'm very interested in doing the route (and my current contract should end just before), but the avg speed seems challenging. And I like to fire-road pretty damn quickly :)

Will keep watching this thread to see what develops. Pretty sure I have all the gear I'd need, just decision that needs to be made. And I like riding in Idaho a lot.

I'm moving to Idaho next month and would love to do this ride but I am not an experienced off road rider. I used to ride a husky 250 2 stroke on trails but I've never taken the S10 on anything but gravel.

For those who have done this ride, how challenging is it? I'd love to do it but I don't want to burden the group.

I was wondering about the conditions myself and went on Youtube and watch some rides. What I came up with is "It depends on the section" :)
