Thanks guys, I definitely removed the rear bungs (not the front!!) but didn't check the seat support was in the high position, I think it has always been in the high position but didn't think to check, I will check tonight!! Hope it is that simple!!

I did and I removed the same bungs but my seat still does not attach very securely, the height adjuster bracket is in the high position. Guess it’s just not meant to be for my bike!!

This may be already known to you...but when you put the underlying seat frame in the higher (rearward) position, it's actually the "low" position. You need to move the underlying seat frame to the "high" position (which is the foreward-most setting) to make this hack work....see owner's manual.

Thanks but yes I have the plastic bracket butting against the tank (in the high position), thanks for all your help, but I can clip the seat in place and then with a light tap on the front of the seat, the back of the seat pops up as the plastic latch on the seat jumps out of the low position to the high position and then the seat rocks back and forth because of the missing rubber bungs.. I can live with it in stock high position as its al;ready fairly flat.

Mine does the same thing with my Sargent seat and the stock one. The tongue on the seat base just doesn't engage in the lower position far enough. Back to using the short bumpers (bungs) on the seat base.

I think that some change may have been made to later model seats as my '14 does the same thing -- i.e. it doesn't engage the lower slot in the frame sufficiently to retain the back of the seat. As long as the front latch is secure it doesn't much matter though.

I did this to mine as well.
If I use the low position at the back, and the high position at the front, I have the larger gap between the seat and the tank.
It is latched at the front, and is secure and solid.
The gap doesn't bother me, as long as the seat is level. I didn't like being tilted toward the front.

Never realized there was a low section in the back. I just fixed mine and can’t wait to try it out. Also just ordered a RDL.

I did this mod and love it. It made all the difference in comfort on long rides. I have put in 600+ mile days and it is so much better.

I have a bit of a gap at the front and it helps not having the seat rub on the gas tank scuffing the paint.

Excellent no cost mod for me.

Seat is not loose or wobbly. Mines a 16es.

To ride all day, day after day the seat has to be right. This mod has made all the difference for all day riding even with the stock seat that I prefer. Glad it is helping guys out.
I also do this same mod to my 2017 and it works perfect on it.

  • I've tried and tried, several sessions over many weeks.
  • I've got a 2017 ES (California model, maybe I have extra emissions silliness in the way?)
  • If I put the carrier in the high seat position I cannot get the back tongue into the low position, the cross member of the carrier seems to be designed to prevent that from accidentally happening. I can get the tongue into the high position but then the back of the seat rocks up and down about a centimeter.
  • I put a little piece of rubber in the top half of the upper tongue slot to keep the seat from rocking (similar to the hole drilling and short plug method I also see here), it's a little more level than stock and something worth knowing about, I could use it sometime, but not quite what some of you seem to achieve.
  • I removed the middle two plugs from under the seat, I messed with taking the other 4 out in any combination that made sense and nothing was better, so I have the 2 in front, 2 in back, and the middle 2 out.
  • I think I had it right at one point, I'm not sure how I got it there but didnt realize it until the next time I took the seat off and on.
  • It does seem like my back seat gets in the way when I'm trying to get the tongue into the bottom slot, maybe I have to push really hard against it (I did, but harder I guess). I notice in the video that they guys back seat is significantly different from mine, maybe that's part of it.
  • I'm considering cutting the piece of the carrier that keeps the tongue from going into the bottom slot (that's what she said?) but dont want to risk any downtime if it somehow doesn't hold my seat steady anymore after cutting. They are $15, I think I will order one and then cut one once I have two as to not risk downtime.
  • Any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated. I stuck my phone under the seat and got some pictures if anyone is interested.

That seat base plate or carrier you call it.
When you say that you have it in the High position , is it in the forward place or the rear placement?
