Are fork leg guards necessary on Tenere?

Put Sox on only right before the excursion off road and take them off afterwards. The grit and moisture trapped under the leading edge of the Sox is like fifty grit sandpaper, well, 100 grit...
I’ve had SOXs on for 172,000 km without any problems. I do clean them once in a while though.

I sent my forks and Penske to Konflict for springs, valving & SKF seals. Stock seals were weaping in the first month, they’re notoriously poor no matter how much internet mumbling about cleaning them goes on.
172,000 km with Sox socks and never had a leaking seal.

It must be a regional thing or where individuals go or something. I recently put sox on just because it was a good idea, but have a lot of miles on two Teneres on road and off, and never had a leak.

I have a 2015 bought new late 2016. No forks covers. went all the way up the Dalton in June 2017. Came back with a fork seal leaking. Warranty covered. I am going to put sox on for the BDR. seems like cheap insurance.

I believe 90% of the various guards you can buy are pointless expense.

I have been off-roading my 2014es for 4 years, its been dropped and crashed more times than I can remember and even dragged around while lying on its side to get it in to a better position to pick back up.

I have Altrider skid plate, crash bars and rear pannier racks and they have ben enough to protect the bike from damage in every fall.

Back to the original question about the fork guards my lower fork legs still look brand new and I don't have anything fitted.

Ok, I put them on and they do look great. Can't test them because it's January in Vermont, Really beefs up the front end though. The Altrider universal heal guard is a nice add on too. The Touratec quick release headlight guard is my favorite farkle , although, I'm not totally sure it's legal in Vermont.
They work on this Ms. river sandy mud here. That shit will dry on your forks quick and turns the tubes into giant files on the seals

Same here. 4 Teneres, a little over 100K miles between them. Always had sox on them, so far have never had a leak. I ride a lot of dirt roads.

I do take a shop vac to them to clean out the dust every couple of years.
